Southampton are adamant that they will not sell Victor Wanyama to Tottenham Hotspur next year for any price and have also become extremely reluctant to do business with Spurs for any player.

The only reason they'll be anywhere near CL places this year is because they got dumped out of Europe at the first hurdle.

Sounds a bit pointless if this is true. He's in the last year of his contract come the end of the season, so they will have to do business since Wanyama says he won't sign another contract. I don't think its in their business plan to let a player with his value leave on a free-transfer.

Levy is always trying to make friends and influence people, so they've clearly got him all wrong down there at Southampton! Its just as well that this misunderstanding hasn't directly resulted in us being left with only one striker this season, with the pressure of the world upon his shoulders. Oh wait...

They dont want to sell to us because we are a rival, yet they will do business with Liverpool despite fact we have finished above Liverpool 5 out of the last 6 years

Weird logic from them

Weird article.

Southampton and WBA pissed off with Spurs for trying to buy their players. Yet then Man Utd also pissed off with Spurs for making it difficult for them to buy Spurs players.

Naughty Spurs.

spurs chairman levy seems to be getting it in the neck from every club and pundit.i ask you how; when transfers seemed to be coming to a sensible level then along comes city spending 158mill ;unt spending 58mill on a prospect and Chelsea spending there usual 50 mill plus again how do you expect clubs with a much smaller budget to compete in the transfer arena
what would you pay for a man reaching his final year in his contract?
I like that levy is not liked by other chairmen because it means he wont be made to pay over the top for players
it means he is trying to get the best deal for the club in doing so we miss out on one target then move on to the next target
one thing I have learned about football transfers is as one door closes another one opens.
I would laugh myself greatl if berahino and wanyama said sod it "i will see out my contract and move on a bosman"
how smart would the hierarchy at saints and WBA look then
well played dan keep being a tight arse so as not to run us into financial ruin

You are right that they will have to do business but their point is NOT WITH US!! I am all for running the club in a sensible manner but this reputation as being a difficult club to deal with and where our chairman is constantly being called out is one we could do without.

We've had it with Southampton for years since the way we took Dean Richards (RIP) off them. Aulas at Lyon went public about the way we acquired Lloris. Same for attempted deals with Middlesbrough for Downing years ago and Leicester with Heskey. There were the sneaky deals to get Fryers from Man U via a belgian club and the Swansea deal with Vorm that meant we couldn't name him on the bench for several months due to the wrangle about sell on clauses from his original club in the Netherlands. Story goes when we tried to take Morientes from Real over 10 years ago, Levy proposed a deal so complicated and convoluted that they put the phone down. And the less said about the Berahino saga the better.

I often hear the applause our chairman gets for his brinkmanship but I am personally sick to the back teeth about these 'Spurs are difficult to deal with' stories. There are lots of clubs with less resources than us doing business in a way that is not antagonistic. If the players we want are truly out of our reach then let's just accept that and focus on developing our own or taking a punt on young hopefuls with potential. I mean a £10m opening bid for Schneiderlin is just a complete joke. Afterall, you wouldn't go into Harrods to shop if you want to pay Primark prices would you.

The reality is that the new mega £5bn TV deal (71% increase on previous deal) announced a few months ago, recent trend towards lucrative post season tours etc means the clubs have vastly more resources than before.

A lot of focus often goes on the top clubs but also realise that the likes of West Ham, WBA, Watford, Villa and Leicester have also spent between £25 - £50m in one window without having to sell their key assets which would have been unthinkable a few seasons ago.

The game has changed so we just need to come to terms with that and get with the programme.

But then Levy gets it in the neck as he's "not backing the manager" if he's not going after the targets the manager has asked for. Can't win.

I don't buy that Levy burns bridges at all. People go on about Aulas for the Lloris transfer, but we managed to do a deal for N'Jie didn't we? Southampton said they wouldn't deal with us again after Dean Richards (RIP), but that's not been the case at all.

"South Coast Big Club" are just a bitter outfit. We've pinched their manager, Liverpool have raided their team and they are a two bob outfit. They can suck their mum.

Yes - Like I said that is my opinion so each to their own. I am a businessman myself and believe you can play and negotiate hard without compromising your integrity, honour and class at the same time. The Fryers deal was low and classless In MY VIEW.

Although I tend to agree with you 'Smokin...' If Levy got one over on Ferguson, then I say: 'Good on you Daniel.'

Fair play. I think we went about it really well. Man U have been scandalous in the way they have tapped up our players which is actually against the rules despite the FA never following up on it. What we did was above board but obviously a little sneaky.

Was the Fryers deal something to be proud of as a club? I found it low, conniving and slimy and it made me ashamed of our club. Each to their own and all that so maybe it's just me......

And if we were going to the trouble of a very sneaky/clever deal (depending on your opinion) it could've at least been for a half decent player!!

Very rarely does a deal happen where the player is not 'tapped up' in advance usually via a third party. Everyone is at it including us. I am very good friends with a couple of lads that have played in the premier league and have been away on summer holidays with them whilst their agents are lining up deals (transfers or new contracts) back home. If not for this insight, I would not believe some of the goings on behind the scenes in football from clubs, agents, players alike..Horrible business football.

.

Yes we can. If we can't afford the manager's first choice players then we just need to be honest with him instead of trying to unsettle the players via protracted transfer wranglings when valuations are so far apart. Maybe we just need to improve our scouting network and focus on finding the next Benteke, Coutinho, Ayew (early days i know) or even VDV ;). There are definitely deals to be done out there within budget.

Not winning is persevering with difficult deals where we are not willing to pay what is being asked for and then leaving ourselves woefully short of numbers and quality in probably the most crucial position in the team.
