Southampton have offered highly-rated youngster Gareth Bale a deal extension after rejecting two Premiership club bids, reports BBC Radio Solent.

Manchester United are believed to have followed Tottenham in making a firm offer for Wales international Bale.

But Southampton hope to keep the 17-year-old full-back through to 2009 with a one-year contract extension.

The Championship club have also received inquiries from Newcastle, Arsenal and Liverpool.

Southampton, keen not to see Bale leave in similar circumstances to Arsenal striker Theo Walcott 12 months ago, are confident Bale will sign the extended contract.

But if the defender turns down the offer, they believe they will have to cash in and sell him, before his transfer value diminishes towards the end of his contract.

Bale has scored five goals in 25 Saints appearances this season and marked his debut as Wales' youngest international by setting up their late winner in the 2-1 victory against Trinidad & Tobago in May.

Southampton are prepared to make teenage starlet Gareth Bale the highest paid player at the club after turning down two bids from Tottenham and Manchester United.

Southampton value Bale at £7million pounds.

Manager George Burley said: "Gareth has already said he wants to stay and we want to keep him for as long as possible."

Bale has just 18 months to run on his present deal and if he turns down the offer of a new contract, the club may be forced to sell as his transfer value will drop dramatically.

Left-back Bale is a former roommate of Theo Walcott who was sold to Arsenal during last year's January transfer window for £12million.

Watched him in Championship highlights last weekend and he looked very hot indeed for such a young guy. But if we're up against Man Utd.....?

yep, would love us to sign this lad but as always with a left footer the competition to sign him looks quite intense. I can see us missing out here and going for Baines in the summer.

Man Utd are "bigger" BUT we have a record of getting our young players first team games. At Utd he'd have to get past Gabby and Evra.

Surely if United sign him, they already have Evra, Heinze and Silvestre who play LB, we could poach one of those. Heinze for me would be the one.

I don't think it would be a good idea for him to go to United.
With Evra, Heinze and Silvestre all ahead of him, he would never get a game for them.

I really like the look of Bale and I think it would be a real shame if we didn't get him, look at our recent record with youngsters, we know how to look after and develop them.

    Get him in Jol.

Having said that United are the best at looking after and developing young players.

    Get him in quick Jol.

Think it looks like Man U to be fair, more money and yes Evra, Heinze and Silvestre are there but Evra is nothing special, Heinze is best in the middle and Silvestre is just shit.

There was a brief noise this am. about West ham and Gardner and, more interestingly, Mexes moving to the Prem....where?
Would be some backup for our current pairing.

If it is between us and utd he would be far better of signing for us as he would go straight into our first team rather than sitting on the bench at utd or any of the other teams linked with him for that matter.

A 17 year old with no Premiership experience would go straight into our first team? Over Lee and Assou-Ekotto? I seriously doubt that.
