Hope we don't fall into the trap of spending money from budget on what will likely be a haphazard backup striker just because we feel we need a backup striker.

Strikers near enough always require game time to maintain form and sharpness, something you won't get here. No matter the quality of the player all that will happen from sitting on bench is they become a worthless option due to their form disappearing.

There is not a single striker on the planet who you'd class as quality who will sign for Spurs with Kane here. You end up with prospects (Janssen), experience (Llorente) or second rate strikers (Rondon). All end the same way that most footballers who aren't getting game time would.

Don't bother with a backup Striker only able to play at 9. Either simply use Son as backup or buy someone who will start games on left or right but can also play up top, something that means he's in form and sharp if needed to deputise for Kane.

Absolutely. I could see the sense in Rodriguez who could play wide or up top (Martial is obviously the top pick). I'm sure many will throw their hands up in horror at that suggestion but, as you say, we'll struggle to bring in a quality/experienced back up for Kane. Rondon is proper pony though.

I think he would have the same problems as our other backup strikers .

As he can only play up front he would get very little playing time. As a result would never be match fit and would not perform when required.

I think our only option is a wide forward so he could play in other positions when Kane is playing.

That said I have been quite impressed with Rondon the few times I have seen him this season.

Its not the worst bit of business we could do. 16 million for an experienced back-up striker. its nothing to get excited about but Janssen and Llorente offered little, and its not like we are going to get a top striker to ride the pine.
Good points you make and totally agree. But this last one will get some folks' 'back up'. I don't know if was anger due to the general lack of conifers on the island or a hatred of soft woods. @GB160:cautious:

We were interested in him two years ago so I wouldn't be surprised if there was something in this.

This is verified by the mods.

EDIT: Should maybe be more explicit: We wanted him two years ago.

Makes no sense at all to me to get another backup striker who can only play one position. He'll barely play and when he does etc ... If the club haven't learnt by now after Janssen and Llorente ..

Honestly I would quite like him?

Big
Fast
Strong
Technically very good
Does not stop running always hassling defenders
Bullies defenders and is also a very nice guy.

He's better than Llorente and Janssen he's also been quite good for West Brom. He's always made our defenders look average so maybe with better service you never know for 16 million you won't get much better.

I'm guessing this is one of the 'meh' guys Hercules just mentioned. Don't know why we would be so focused on Martial but also bring in this guy unless that deal is just dead.. This is going to be exactly like the winger situation, we spent cheap money on N'koudou, N'jie and then finally just spent real money and got it right with Lucas. Now we're about to do it three times on Janssen, Llorente and Rondon when we could have just spent the original fee on Batshuayi and gotten it right, frustrating.

With all due respect, I don't want someone who's big, strong, runs and is a nice guy. I want someone who can fill in for Kane on the rare occasions he isn't playing and score goals.

2006–2008 Aragua49(15) - Never seen him play then
2008–2010 Las Palmas46(10)- Done well in a very poor team.
2010–2012 Málaga67(25) - Carried malaga scored some memorable goals also led to the retirement I think of Van Nistlerooy
2012–2014 Rubin Kazan36(13) - Was a force done really well despite abuse from the fans
2014–2015 Zenit Saint Petersburg37(20) - Again done excellent scored some important goals
2015– West Bromwich Albion108(24) - Done well in spits and bursts but he's also used as a target man where they Lump the ball up to him to flick on etc but he's a big old unit but he's not exactly a target man even harry would struggle to score that many for an awful West Brom team.

)National team‡ 2009 Venezuela U2011(7)
2008– Venezuela66 (19)

IMO you always need a second true striker - someone who will hold the ball up and do the other dirty work strikers do. I love Sonny but he doesnt do that well.

No but the problem is why would you as a striker join spurs?

We won't be getting a striker thats good enough to start ahead of Kane etc.

So you have to look at the next tier down a decent enough player to sit on the bench that can influence games.

No. You have to look at players who can also play as an attacking mid so they aren't rotting on the bench getting rusty when Kane is playing.

The idea we don't need another striker is an odd one. The problems we've had with Janssen and Llorente is they've been crap, not that the role isn't substantive enough. We could very much use a striker who comes off the bench regularly, or fills in for Kane, and actually makes a difference. There are plenty of games where you'd like to have someone play right up top with Kane.

I don't know if Rondon is that player, but I can see plenty of reasons why he'd be an upgrade on Janssen and Llorente, about whom most people were delighted to sign last season.

We definitely need a stronger bench. And if Kane gets injured, we need to be able to play as though we have 11 effective players, with the option of keeping the same shape.

I think Rondon is a pretty good player. At least he has some areas of his game that are very strong--in this case physical strength--rather than getting a jack-of-all-trades, good in all areas but not great in any type. I can see why having a backup with some very clear strengths could be beneficial.

Definitely not a sexy signing, but physically the guy is a beast. I honestly can't remember any other striker this season outmuscling our own unit, Davinson, as much as Rondon.

I saw reports on what he does - runs the channels really well, never lets the central defenders get any peace and then brings his supporting players into the game. I've always felt we needed a big fast lump up front as an alternative. I could have almost cried when we used to bring Llorente on and he did sweet fa. At least Janssen 'ran round a bit', backed into players and tried. I'm not against this idea - whether he's the best one for us at that I don't know. We're too nice.
