I dont think he's failed at anything - and despite what the Mirror thinks i feel most Spurs fans would agree. First season in the Prem, 2 different managers, 2 different styles of play, no summer break. Yet still bagged 8 goals and a few assists. Sure we may have been hoping we had signed someone with Ronaldo-esc impact but truthfully at £17m we signed a very good midfielder who (IMHO), with the right style of play and time to settle, will have a major impact on the league. But the press do love to create a story "Rubbish Spurs player playing for BRAZIL!?!!?!?!" Jog on Mirror

Paulinho is a classy player imho. In such a turbulent year we still managed 6th. With a settled and more experienced squad, especially with a manager more accustomed to South American playing styles I expect him to become a dominant figure for us. As long as we keep him... because I bet the next story about him in the Mirror will be how Chelsea want him to replace Lampard. Honestly, I can't believe people buy tabloids...

''The midfielder has failed to live up to expectations at White Hart Lane''

Depends what you expected of him, if you expected him to be like Bale or Ronaldo then yes he's been shite.

if you expected him to be Charlie Adam then he's had a blinder.

if you expected him to be like a player new to a team, new to a different country, league and style of play then im sure you'd agree he's done good.

He has done better than Bale, compared to young Bales first season!

Was it 24 games without being on the winning side?

Paulinhio is quality but needs to play in a 3, not 4-4-2.

I hope we stick with him and sandro!

I was just reading the paddy power odds and we are sixth favourites by quite a margin.

Personally I think we have an excellent squad full of talented players and am surprised the bookmakers don't recognise that.

Man City 15/8
Chelsea 9/4
Man Utd 5/1
Liverpool 6/1
Arsenal 9/1
Tottenham 33/1
Everton 80/1

oh ... and West Ham 5000/1 (the bookmakers are spot on with this one.) ;)

To be fair the majority of us have been like the chavs; demanding instant success. The boy came from Corinthians moving 5,500 miles to a league that's known for being the most competitive and physical league in the world. He still provided 28 appearances, 6 goals and 2 assists. I'd love to say every midfielder we signed had a debut season like that.

Seems about right to me.

a few tap ins doesn't erase the countless anonymous performances, bottled tackles and half-arsed effort he puts in.

Seems about right to me.

Despite having a hugely disrupted season, losing our best player, not having a left back, trying to bring in seven new signings, having the worst injury record in the prem and having two managers who did not seem to know their best team or how to deploy them and were not supported by their boss for most of their time in charge (not pleasant for anyone) we still finished sixth.

I remain optimistic we will do much better this season.

But on balance you'd say we'd have no right to finish above those other teams wouldn't you despite what went on last season. 6th place is where we should be in the table bases on our wages compared to the others.

If it was just about how much money you spend on wages why bother to have a manager. The manager is supposed to build a team that is more than the sum of its parts. So wages paid to players is only one factor in building a successful team.

I'm talking about salaries paid to staff including the manager, physios, scouts, coaches, groundsman, tea ladies etc...so with that in mind your wage budget will only attract a certain type of manager anyway so the point still stands.
