Reckon we’d have won something with Gazza, Sheringham and Klinsmann in the team :)

And of course there was that legendary (but apparently true) story of Gerry Francis turning down the chance to sign Zidane around this time:

--------------Klinsmann-----------------

Gazza----Sheringham---Anderton

-----------Zidane-------------------------

----------------------Howells------------

Love the way Howells would be thinking "Just keep your head down Davey old-boy and hopefully no one will spot the odd one out"

Back then Scottish football, although not brilliant, wasn't considered as bad as it is now

Celtic and Rangers at least were considered big clubs and there was always talk of them joining the English Leagues

As for Gazza, by then he was carrying 'baggage' as well as a serious injury (or two). Rangers were prepared to pay him 15k a week (according to wiki) in 1995, so it made sense really.
Yes Rangers in particular were still genuinely good in the 90s (Celtic not so much), and they paid big money for a few stars. They knocked Leeds out of the CL in 92/93 and regularly had good European results until the early 2000s.

With that and the money they could pay Gazza going there wasn't anywhere near as huge a shock as a similar player moving there would be today.

They also had Brian Laudrup who was a cracking player and a few years later Gattuso

Plus their Scottish players weren't shocking, many of whom went on and did a decent enough job in the PL (the likes of Duncan Ferguson, etc)

I remember hearing Ally McCoist tell a cracking story about Gattuso involving Gazza at Rangers. Supposedly Gattuso was one of these "trains like he plays" type midfielders and didn't hold back from the tackles etc. Anyway, so the week leading up to the Old Firm game, Gattuso has recently joined and the Rangers manager doesn't want any injuries so he apparently turns to Gazza and says "Oi Gazza, you speak a bit of Italian. Can you tell the lad to take it easy? Last thing we need is someone breaking their leg in training this week. We need 3 points on Saturday"

Gazza, ever the prankster, proceeds to tell Gattuso in Italian "Listen Rino, where's your passion? The manager says he needs to see more from you if you want to play in the derby on Saturday. You've no idea how big this game is. Go out there and make a point" etc. They start up with training again and the first time Gazza gets the ball he lumps it straight through to Ally McCoist, who before he knows what's happening proceeds to get absolutely clattered by a flying Rino Gattuso's studs at about chest height. While he's on the floor in a heap, the manager's going absolutely mental at a very confused Gattuso. Meanwhile Gazza's down the other end of the pitch absolutely pissing himself :ROFLMAO:

Classic Gazza

They've produced some cracking players and legendary managers so it's kind of a shame to see them at such a low level, though obviously the schadenfreude is most amusing.

I don't know where people get this rumour from. It was Dalglish at Blackburn who turned Zidane down, quoted as saying "why would I sign this Zidane fella, when I've got Tim Sherwood?"

we turned down bergkamp in favour of Chris Armstrong ...
