My point wasn't that we should have bought those players, not at all.

My point was that those clubs all scouted players well within their financial reach, where deals could be done, the players themselves were keen on the move, and they performed to the level expected of them. None of which are seemingly the case for the Damiao deal. You've also got to ask yourself, can you think of any other transfer saga as long-winded and farcical as this one? It must be four or five transfer windows now, same deal every time. Any other club would've had the sense to move on by now.

Interesting you bring up Le Fondre. If we had a striker who could score 10 goals in 25 appearances, 15 of those off the bench, we'd be creaming ourselves over him. I'd bet even more so if he was called Il Fondrinho.

How come? We found Berbatov, Modric and Sandro didn't we? We signed Holtby for an incredibly low fee. I'm sure we look at hundreds of players but it's about identifying which ones the manager would actually use and then trying to tie up a deal.

I would imagine that there are tonnes of legal problems trying to bring under-16's into the country to play football so we are always going to be looking at a slightly older age group of players (if foreign) who will be starting to make a name for themselves if they are any good.

The fact that we didn't sign a striker this January doesn't mean we don't have a scouting network!!

But anybody good enough to go into our first team will be known. The likes of Coulibaly and Luongo etc. go into the youth system and we don't hear about them for years because they have a lot of development to do.

Unless you expect our scouting network to uncover the next, ready-to-go Messi playing on a beach in Rio or something! It just doesn't work like that.
