Sandro and Paulinho were the most recent direct purchased from SA clubs.

There haven't been many direct signings from South America into the premier league over the last 5 years. Almost all of the high profile ones have come via Italy, Spain, Portugal etc. Players I can think off the top of my head are:

Sandro, Paulinho, Lamela, Aguero, Jesus (Man city), Sanchez, Rojo Funes Mori, Willian, Costa, Otamendi, Costa (Brazilian for all intents and purposes), Cambiasso and Rondon.

Only 3 or 4 of those came directly and ironically 2 of them were ours.

I think the combination of change in league, league programme (Start and end date) and cultural challenges mean its more prudent to wait and see how they perform in Spain, Germany or Italy before taking the punt.

By then if they succeed they're often out of our reach

That probably explains why we don't sign many. Besides if we can sign Dele Alli's for as cheap as have why look over there and worry about work permits?

Yeah - all other clubs have gone AWOL so we can unearth Dele Alli's at will...

The complacency surrounding the club is incredible - like we're winning the treble at a canter... There's still plenty of room for improvement

Whatever the issues with signing directly from Argentina, he looks like he is tearing up the league.

Because that's the point I was making? My point was why the need for focussing specifically on Argentina or South America. France, Holland, Belgium etc etc all produce good players that don't need work permits. Why focus on places that are more complicated?

That's not what you said at all. You say we can pick up Dele Alli quality players for a song back home and do not need to concern ourselves with the South American market.

But Dele Alli is a complete one-off. There won't be another player of his kind coming out of the lower leagues for many many years. And then such a player would have to fall into our laps again... You cant' base your scouting policy on flukes like that.

We have to bring in the talents to take us further, wherever they may be found. No reason to leave the Argentine market to our competitors.

Looks like the discussion went sideways.

I don't really know how's the situation of foreign players after the brexit, but Driussi has an italian passport

Oscar is still the most expensive direct signing from South America?
