I know it's been posted before, but if we end up in a position where we can play:

Lloris

Sanchez Alderweireld Vertonghen

Aurier--------------------------------------------------Rose
Then that is a hell of a good defensive base for the rest of the team.

Lloris

Sanchez Alderweireld Vertonghen

Aurier--------------------------------------------------Rose
Dier/Wanyama/Dembele

Eriksen-----Alli-----Son

Kane

Not bad at all, really. Our weaknesses then are on the bench, hence needing to add some serious depth before tomorrow night.

Just can't get excited about this given his history. Maybe I'm just too sensitive and, perhaps, he's seen the error of his ways but he's show zero contrition (aside from the forced apology).

He may be just what we need and £25m, in this market, might be a bargain but I just can't shake this dirty feeling

I share your concerns, but there was some discussion of this on the Totally Football Show podcast this week and the French journalist Julien Laurens said that Aurier was (somewhat bizarrely) really popular in the PSG dressing room, but having grown up in a questionable part of Paris he was still surrounded by some rough individuals who he had remained friends with since his youth (Laurens actually said his whole old council estate used to basically spend every Saturday night partying round his house, and that's where the problems often arose). So Laurens suggested that, a move away from Paris and those figures from his youth may be all that's required to keep him out of trouble. Of course if he falls out with anyone in our squad in the way he did with Zlatan then that is going to spell trouble, as it did at PSG between him and Laurent Blanc, but I'd imagine Pochettino has spoken to him about that as much as (if not more) than his homophobic comments (about Blanc) and assaulting the policeman.

Aurier and Rose have enough athleticism and dynamism to provide necessary support for the front 3. Equally, with such defensive power, we could probably get away without Dier/Wanyama some games, and use Winks alongside Dembele.

Add Wanyama or Dier in front of them as well.

Our defence is definitely not a problem now if Aurier is done.

Edit: Already been mentioned a couple of times.

From Sky Sports:

Serge Aurier's move to Tottenham is imminent, according to Sky sources.

In the past few minutes, we've been told by his representatives he has been granted a work permit enabling him to finalise his transfer.

The clubs agreed a £23m deal last week and Aurier has completed his medical and agreed personal terms.

PSG had set a midday deadline for Aurier to sort out that permit - or he could have been transferred to Barcelona or Juventus, where a permit would not be required.

We are told there was interest from Manchester United and Chelsea - but Aurier has chosen Tottenham and cited Mauricio Pochettino and chairman Daniel Levy as major factors in his decision.

Interesting that both Poch and Levy are cited as major factors in Aurier's decision. It's reasonably common and logical for a player to praise the coach he's going to work for, but rare to praise the chairman or CEO figure.

The cynic (and journalist) in me wonders whether this is PR puff.

But it is certainly possible that Aurier and his people are genuinely grateful to Levy for his willingness to take the lead in attempting to resolve the work permit and visa problems when other clubs ran away.

If so, good on ya, Daniel. :D

Not sure we've ever played that formation (3-3-3-1?) but would work nicely in some games. Barkley and Lamela would fit in there too.

Aurier will be at least same level of Walker and in my opinion Sanchez is an upgrade on Dier at RCB. So technically in a 3 at back we've improved our first 11. If somehow we could just get Barkley and vitally that worthwhile pacey attacking player in tomorrow we would be in such a strong position and I wouldn't see a single weakness in squad.

100% agree.

Dreaded Barton coming to our club which fortunately didn't materialise.

We can hope he's turned over a new leaf but he seems to be one of those Ravel Morisson types where aggravation seems to follow him around.

You would hope the weaknesses aren't on the pitch when fielding 12/13 players.

Tottenham getting a super player in Serge Aurier. He's made mistakes, done stupid stuff, but strong, fast & tailor-made for PL #THFC #PSG

Good business too at €25m. An upgrade on Kyle Walker at less than half the price #THFC

I'll never forget Spiro telling me once that LLoris was too good for Spurs and he wouldnt be with us for more than a season. Haven't respected him since.

I agree about the dirty feeling to a certain extent, and said so earlier in this thread.

We've been a club who doesn't have that sort of player for a while now, so I'd hope we weren't going to compromise that.

All that said, he did do all that at a separate club, and everyone does deserve a second chance. If he disgraces himself whilst a Spurs player I'll be very annoyed. But until then, he deserves a chance to show he's grown up.
