I love that people really think this matters
Haha I know it doesn't just trying to rationalize it in my head. Trying to keep up with my Spurs high!

One thing to note is that we know that we had previous successful dealing with Lazio last year with Keita Balde. I believe the story was the player picked Monaco over us not the club. Maybe relations there are still good.

Just as a hypothetical, would people prefer it if we signed Martial + Pulisic or Savic? Assuming that if we went for Savic we would bring in a 20 mil wing forward and vice versa (a 20 mil CM along with the other two).

I think with Dembele leaving and Winks in an unknown state of survivability for a full season I would personally throw our weight behind one great CM signing. Savic would be my #1 and #2 choice. It seems that Poch and Levy have different ideas.

I suspect we'll see us try and replicate De Bruyne/Silva in the form of Eriksen/Dele.

I think you are right with the latter, something like

-------Dier------
Eriksen---Dele

Son--------Martial
------Kane-------

Eriksen making the play and Dele making late runs in the box. Son, Lucas, Martial/Sess/Pulisic being the players to really hurt teams with pace and trickery in transition. In bigger games a more robust midfielder could come or another ball recycler in Winks and Dele could be pushed up.

Personally unless Savic or Kovacic are doable I think we may as well look down this route. That midfield shape worked great vs Madrid, Dortmund and Liverpool (H), albeit mainly in front of a back 3. Other targets are looking a bit too speculative, and it seems we have better attacking options on the radar currently.

City showed the way this year, by winning heavily more often you reduce the risk of dropping silly points with a mistake or a moment of quality from the opposition. I'd say our goals scored needs to improve next season more than goals conceded.

Savic would 100% be my number 1 but if Utd are being scared off at Lazio's price (read it could be €100m today!) I can't see any way how we'd end up getting him.

Could also be a 3 at back with Eriksen deeper in the tougher away games.

Lloris
KWP...Sanchez...de Ligt...Vertonghen...Rose
Eriksen...Dier
Dele
Kane...Martial
Personally though I think we definitely need to be buying a quality CM to be starting and helping Eriksen creatively.

Formation matters.

If we move to a 3-5-2 or 433, where its a DM sitting behind 2 CMs, then I think we would be fine with Eriksen in that role, with Winks deputizing.

Kane
Dele
Eriksen Lucas
Rose.................Dier.............Trippier
Jan........Sanchez.....de Ligt

It's certainly something that would balance us greatly as a team, but the amount of gettable targets seems to be very thin on the ground compared to other positions. Unfortunately.

I agree but we haven’t really been linked with any central midfielders yet so I’m not sure how much we actually are looking at one. It all seems to be about martial, sessegnon and de ligt so far.

The good news is there's a lot of great CM options out there in the market but the negative is that we might have to wait until the big boys have made their moves. I don't care if it's deadline day though as long as someone of a high standard comes in.

There's loads of potential options. Semi realistic ones are probably Jorginho, Diawara, SMS, Fred, Kovacic, Weigl, Tolisso, Dahoud, Rabiot, Kondogbia and probably more. There's also a few second tier options in Ndombele, De Jong and Gomes if things get a bit desperate.

Can't see teams bigger than us signing all of those players this window. No excuse not to bring in anyone.
De Jong please, seems like an amazing technician! Potential to be the new Dembele.

United in for Fred and Fabinho, doesn't look like they're gonna go for this guy. Can't imagine PSG can get around FFP buying an expensive midfielder. Real don't need him, Barca do but they're obsessed with Brazilians so they're gonna sign Arthur instead and add Griezman. I'm really struggling to find a top club that will be in for him. Lazio may have succesfully scared everyone off. Although after seeing Torino turn down solid offers for Belotti last year they may think twice about sticking hard to that valuation.

Very good post, and that is what is going on. I still count us out, as they want 80-90m for him.

Genuinely believe he is the best midfielder on the market for his age and skillset (I personally wish we had gone after Naby Keita but alas oh well). So I don't blame them for sticking hard to such a lofty evaluation. Would not be surprised if some club came up with some 50/60m guaranteed and 20+m in addons contract to snap him up. Seems like the sort of deal Chelsea would go for with a new manager coming in and needing a big splash to convince the existing team they are serious. Which would be so painful but also predictable.

Appreciate the response. Maybe some good will after the Keita Balde negotiations last year? Seems those went well enough. Probably would have to get dirty on this one though and get the player to start pitching a fit about wanting to go to Spurs (can't imagine how likely that would be). Desperate to get him as he would put us over the top!

I wonder if that price could come down later in the window? Especially if he throws his toys out the pram.
