One or two good moments of vision, ball control but judging on tonight's game alone he's nowhere near match winner worth 80 ml.

Us: "How many matches have you seen to judge this player? YouTube clips don't count!"

Also Us: "Well I watched one world cup match which makes me an expert and he didn't impress me so no."

Wasn't judging him just stating my observations of him in that half.

I am sure he is a very nice young man :cautious:

Have only ever seen him in tonight's match. If that's how he usually is, and he doesn't press, tackle, show for the ball, track back or in any way impose himself on proceedings and he's worth £100m, the much maligned (including by me, tbf) Sissoko is worth a conservative £300m.

Not on eriksen level and not worth a punt on 70m from what o have seen in these games and a couple of europa leagues I have seen him in difficult to see what the major attraction is, no more than a bulk standard 25m player would be

Well he's top1 midfield 'established prospect' in football. It would be nuts if we signed him.

e: and he's more Pogba than Eriksen, but i think he's better Eriksen was his age - and Christian is my favourite player

One of the key biases that humans have is that they naturally believe that what they see is all there is. They don’t stop to consider that the evidence they have is not a fair representation of reality.

Clubs avoid falling foul of this bias by watching a lot of games both on video and in real life. They also cross reference this with a wide array of statistics. This means they gain the best possible view of a player’s performance before signing. But even this is fallible and professional clubs make errors - in part because the past does not guarantee the future and in part because a player’s success depends on dozens of contextual elements that are hard to control when they move club. To give an example, a player might give have a particularly close relationship with some of the other players in his team or his family might be particularly well suited to the climate or culture in a particular city. Changing these can have an impact on performance and make a player appear better or worse.

The upshot of all this is that judging a player’s performance is difficult and is exacerbated by the influence of a whole range of factors other than their ability to play the game.

So enter the average football fan who, because he has a life and does not have time to watch hundreds of players across 4 or 5 leagues, cannot possibly know every player we are interested in. He watches a YouTube video and draws conclusions (usually positive) from a greatest hits clip that he never considers might not be representative of the whole. Those clips represent the best moments and not that ordinary game he played away to relegation strugglers in January. There is no way to know from this video what his average performance is like!

A related error we see at the moment is to judge a player’s based on a World Cup. Not only is this a very small sample size but the myriad other influences on performance that we spoke about earlier are very different from the typical game. The quality and relationship with team mates is different. The familiarity with patterns of play is far weaker than at club level. The pressures associated with representing your country and playing at a big tournament are different. Therefore you are not in a position to draw any sort of judgement beyond the games you have seen.

And yet people do. And they shouldn’t.

Or performances in the Italian league.
Performances over 40+ games in Italian domestic competitions and the Europa league for a good side are a more reliable indicator of future performance than 2 World Cup games for a weak Serbia side.
