saints fans seem to think he will fit in very well with Klopps playing style as he gives 100% for the full 90, never stops running and brings other players into the game... sounds like he is made for the high press and we could do a lot worse (I agree that I would like us to do a lot better but January isn't the best time and we need someone to let harry have a rest...)

He's a bit like Keane when he came to started his downward spiral... he'll run all day but miss key chances that the likes of Kane would bury.

But 95 career goals in 367 appearances - so just over 1 goal in 4 appearances and he's been consistently like that throughout his career.

So if he played striker we'd need to rely on the AM's to score the goals

Shane Long! Decent but I hope we have more ambition than decent, surely we have the funds to push the boat out if the right player is available. That said I'd take him if we can't get anyone better, lessons need to be learned from the last time we were in this position. Would love a big signing Lacazette, Embolo, Berahinho, but if they are not possible, Shane Long and Dembele would be much needed additions to the squad.

Agreed
But halfway through the transfer window and zero movement is not where I expected us to be (it just me if is actually as I expect we will only do our business in the last few days).,,

Although I see your point and, to a degree, agree with you, Leicester City is a team made up of decent players.

What's that got to do with Long? Well, to quote Aristotle, the whole is greater than the sum of it's parts. We could sign "a worldie" but he may not necessarily fit in with what Pochettino wants, or he may think he is 'the man' and is better than everyone else.

I really do understand why people aren't endeared by the thought of Shane Long playing in a Spurs kit, but, despite what they think of his ability, they surely can't deny that he epitomises everything Pochettino asks for from his players?

He may not be a perfect player, but he really is perfect for the system, and also has the experience that our squad is desperately lacking, and our captain believes we need.

Not perfect, practical ! (y)

It's just occurred to me that you get more than your fair share of "winner" ratings because of your avatar. I do however agree with every word of your post :)

I never thought of that. Basically my avatar is there to get people to concentrate on those tits, rather than the tit posting. Damn you may be onto something

Just been voted player of the month for December by Southampton fans. His 2 goals against Arsenal on Boxing Day probably secured him the 49% of the votes he got. That'll do for me!

I was coming around to the idea of him as back up but didn't realise he turns 29 two days from now. Thought more like 25/26. Wouldn't necessarily be a problem in and of itself but given the money Southampton would want (paid £12m for him less than 18 months ago) this does not make financial sense. Let Liverpool overload themselves with more even more forwards that they'll be wanting rid of a year from now

Just the fact that he's practically perfect for everything Poch asks of his players, means he's well worth whatever he'd cost, in my opinion. Add to that the experience factor, something that our squad is bereft of, and our skipper states is required if we really want success, and I think that backs up my opinion somewhat. Still, it is just that, my opinion (y)

Is there actually anything of substance in this or is it just a rumour that's done the rounds and hasn't (yet) been dispelled?

My own tuppenceworth is this. Shane Long is clearly a journeyman striker. Spent so long playing hurling at home in Tipperary that he came to England too late and didn't receive the requisite coaching at the requisite age. He is patently not what Spurs need to raise them a level and he'd sink without trace in CL matches against the top clubs.

But...

He'll run and run, he'll take the pressure off Kane, he'd be a pretty decent Plan B and his presence - if not his goals - might well make the difference between fourth and fifth this season. With the new TV kicking in, this strikes me as a no-lose punt.

£12m+ on a 29 year old backup does not seem like a no-lose punt to me. I agree with most of what you said but not at values being mentioned.

Ah-ah: you omitted the first part of the sentence, which was equally relevant - "With the new TV deal kicking in..."

And in turn I agree with you that £12m on a 29-year-old isn't a course of action to be normally contemplated (and indeed would run counter to everything Levy stands for). I'd actually prefer to see Dembele being signed as a long-term investment.

The issue, it strikes me, is this: is it worth gambling £12m - £12m that we can afford but will never recoup - in the hope that Long's signing will clinch us a CL spot, therefore paying for itself a couple of times over? I feel it's worth the risk, but I agree it's very much a judgement call.
