Anyone on SC - who's seen him play regularly - who thinks he can do an "Harry Kane"...?

http://www.hitc.com/en-gb/2016/01/1...hotspur-talent-shaq-coulthirst-tweets-after/?

This month has seen Tottenham Hotspur linked with plenty of striking options already as they currently have just Harry Kane and Heung-min Son as recognised striking options up top.

Of course there is one Tottenham academy graduate who has often found himself knocking at the door of the Tottenham first-team, only to be turned away.

Shaq Coulthirst is the player in question.

The lethal striker was linked with Barcelona once upon a time but at 21-years-old has still not made an impact on the Tottenham first-team.

In the summer he was loaned out to Wigan Athletic of League One after previous spells with the likes of Leyton Orient, Torquay United, Southend United and York City.

But Coulthirst was recalled by Spurs after a poor time at the DW Stadium for the former England under-19 international.

He suffered with injuries this term and the 21-year-old managed just 53 minutes of football with Wigan since August.

Now he is back with the Spurs under-21s and this week made headlines after scoring twice in a thriller with their Chelsea counterparts. He netted a brace, including an absolutely incredible headed effort, to again remind the club of his talents.

Yesterday he took to Twitter to express his joy at bagging a brace - even though the club eventually lost the game 5-4.

Coulthirst's brace was lost amid the same result from Andros Townsend in the game but Coulthirst is now knocking on that Tottenham door once again.

It will be interesting to see whether Maurico Pochettino lets him in.

Should Coulthirst get a chance?

I know a Wigan fan who thought he was awful, seems some of the youth-watchers (e.g. Windy) think the same.

Awful's harsh but fair to say I can't see him making it here. Hasn't developed since he was 18, has gotten a bit stronger but that's really it. Lacks the composure and finishing to be a top striker. Thought there was a glimpse at the end of his loan last year where he might have rekindled a tiny flame of hope but no that has recently been extinguished. Some raw talent there where if he develops more all round play he could become something, but the fact he was pictured training with Fleetwood down last week suggests the club don't see a future with him

Ooh, you've gone & done it now ... I recall reading almost identical things (not necessarily written by you (y)) about another young striker we have on our books. Turns out he isn't actually too shabby ;)

Disclaimer!! I know they're not really comparable, but history does suggest it's perhaps not best to write someone off too soon :sneaky:

It's not too soon to write him off though. He is only 1 year younger than Kane, in fact Kane had played a higher level (and well) at the the age of 18 than Shaq has now. This time last season, when he was the same age as Shaq, Kane had already scored 8 goals in just the PL (plus another 3 the season before) and 18 in all comps so far that season.

Haha I guess but I've been saying positive things about Harry since he was 17/18 and 2 years ago said I think he'd be our striker version of Ledley King, so am quite patient and believe I can tell if someone is decent.

Also while I understand your point you can't hold onto players forever, he is only a year younger than Harry and hasn't shown anything anywhere, if he suddenly turned into a World Class striker I'd say fair play but no point extending in his contract in hope

While some people, it can be argued, develop quicker I think the most overriding thing, is that Kane has always looked significantly more talented than Coulthirst from 17 to 21 so I can't see him suddenly blossoming.

Yeah I know mate, and I was taking the piss really (y)

As I constantly say, I'm not fortunate enough to be able to see our youth players as much as many on here, if at all, unless they're on Sky Sports like the other night. So I really do appreciate the info you more knowledgeable people share on here.

I actually didn't realise Shaq was only a year younger than Kane, I thought he was about 19, you know, just out if his teenage years :cautious::D..

Maybe he could be another Ryan Mason?

I have always rated him and was disappointed he didn't get better loans. Watched him the other night and thought why not give him a go from the bench? He's a busy trucker, strong for his size has a good eye for goal and makes some good runs. If we can't close the SB deal then I think he should be added to the 1st team squad. If people are raving about the likes of Carter Vickers and co then I think he should be there as well

I never knew (or read on here) how fast the lad is. Considering pace is one of the things we are sorely lacking, and forgetting that he's not (apparently) yet ready to play the big boys, surely he'd be a reasonable option from the bench, as that pace would give opposing defenders much more to think/worry about?

He's no faster than Son or N'Jie, but is definitely worse technically than both, so I'm not sure if he would be worth a spot on the bench.

Shaq's a hard worker but there isn't enough to his game for him to make it at Tottenham. He is not really quick and not really the best of finishers but has a great work ethic which I think will mean he will make a living but not at the top level unfortunately

I dunno, he took his goals very well the other night. Surely worth a shot, maybe not this season but next. I think it would be worth reviewing one more loan deal before writing him off

I

I believe he will be out of contract at the end of the season I don't think it will be renewed - if you wan't to make a comparison think Jon Obika who incidentally was a better finisher than Shaq. He is honest and works hard but he isn't a premier league striker

Again difference between him and Mason. Mason was the poster boy of the academy at one point as he was the best player in it. He also had good loans at Netball and Yeovil I believe. Compared to Shaq who was a decent prospect that never developed and hasn't particular stood out at any loan do far. The chances of him doing a Mason are a lot slimmer. Though it could happen but then you'd never ever release a player and just St be holding to them in case something happens which in the end doesn't help them and just costs us wages. Have to Jake a decision at some point.

He took his goal well but I was also surprised impressed as I've seen him miss far easier chances than that. Thing is he's going to score eventually all strikers will just how regularly and if he's not scoring what will he offer. I can't see him scoring regularly in the PL anytime soon and his general play isn't on the level we require Harrison is far better in that aspect.
