He's just scored. Went close in the first half, taking the ball down on the right, cutting inside and shooting. It was pushed wide.

I'll post the goal when the A-League twitter adds it...

ALeague is competing with a lot of other countries in the same boat in terms of trying to improve the quality of the league and have a lasting improvement in the countries football stock. Places like China, Japan and India, with their big money sides, are now well ahead of A League at a time when Man City created the link up with Melbourne and when it should have been an opportunity to get some good players over there on loan or a place for players to finish their careers. Even UAE and Saudi are not even talked about as options but are still ahead of A League in terms of quality.

its a real shame

Shay has just been replaced. 64 mins. 0-0 vs Adelaide. Just before, he put in a cross for a header which was tipped over the bar, but earlier he also took a knock and wasn't quite right after that.

Last week during the Melbourne City game the commentators were lamenting the poor quality of some imports. They questioned whether Florin Berenguer (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Florin_Berenguer) is really worth taking an overseas player spot when you look at his career and he's only played 200ish games in his entire career and most of those have been in the French 2nd division.

No idea what sort of contract he's on but I think it's a valid point overall. The league doesn't/can't attract very good players very often and this sort of signing could end up blocking the path for a youngster to develop, or at least using money they could allocate elsewhere. But you're right. The league has to compete against other leagues and doesn't have the finances to beat them to signings, so you end up with this type of player.

My biggest surprise about the A League is that they don't try and get more British based players on loan. The quality of the League is probably on par with some low championship sides and should be attractive to Premiership club youth players, especially if those clubs are playing in AFC Champions League and also with there not being a language barrier.

If i was a club general manager or DOF my first task would be to get players like Edwards or Roles to spend a season for development. Those players could really use the time and would make A name for themselves.
Just our academy/youth set up has players in it that could go and be starters in the A League.

This may happen next year. My nearest team, the Brisbane Roar, 2nd bottom and utter utter shit, have just appointed Robbie Fowler as manager. 14 players out of contract at the end of the season. Huge changes coming. Maybe there will be some young players on loan.

There's a new team in the league next year, an expansion side from Western Melbourne, so even greater competition for a shallow pool of players.

Plus there's worse places you could go and play football!

Harrison isn’t really considered on the track to the first team is he? Would it be surprising to see him move to Melbourne permanently after this? I can see how that might be attractive in many ways vs a League One or even a bottom-table Championship side.
