DM's COLUMN
Let's not forget, in the glow of satisfaction, that for the first half hour we were not playing at all well - routinely passing to the opposition, who fortunately had no one who could finish and were almost as keen to pass back to us. There was a period of about 10 minutes when we could not string more than two or three passes together before giving the ball away. Not once.
Charlton's midfield played pretty well, the mistake that led to Defoe's goal being almost the only exception. Unfortunately for them, their only quality striker, Darren Bent, is off form and, despite his best efforts, Andy Reid cannot supply him all on his own.
And their defence was panic personified. Quite a bit of that panic was caused by Berbatov's ball-retention pulling people out of position, Lennon's flicks and moves and Huddlestone's and Malbranque's through-balls. But they weren't good enough individually and they weren't organised enough collectively to cope with a Spurs side that seems to have left its finishing problems behind it (for the time being...).
Robinson was surprisingly busy for a match that we won 5-1. And he did extremely well - a good performance, the highlight of which was his perfect sliding tackle outside the area in the second half.
The defenders looked solid throughout, except for Dawson's unfortunate own goal and Chimbonda's poor positioning that led to Reid setting it up.
That is two superb displays in a row from Huddlestone. He looks more and more like Carrick. The time and space. The calming, easy passes when we need to keep possession and the pinpoint attacking passes when there is something on. I saw very few positional errors from him today and, although Andy Reid out-ran him (!), it wasn't his job to be in that position anyway.
Best of all, he shoots. He shoots hard, he generally shoots accurately and he shoots from far enough out to affect the way defences have to play us. Now that we are playing at least two players who can hit the target from outside the box (Defoe being the other one), we're seeing less of the opposition packing the box and waiting for us to try to force the ball through it. And as they come out to meet us, that leaves the space for the one-twos and the through balls to penetrate into the box.
Malbranque is visibly improving. It was an excellent goal and, when he managed to get the ball in a threatening position, he usually tried an attacking pass. Some of them even worked. He's getting there and the goal should help.
Tainio had a good game and worked well with Huddlestone. He takes up a lot of space and that's essential when you're playing with a deep-lying playmaker like Huddlestone.
Lennon didn't "wander" into the centre, he was shifted there - Jol said so after the match. Probably to counter their 5 man midfield. It worked very well - now that he is systematically being double-teamed on the right by nearly every defence he sees, he has to be allowed to wander if he is going to cause the kind of chaos that he used to create out wide. He had a superb game, full of tricks and flicks and effective use of the ball.
And our two strikers were top notch today. Defoe got barged a lot early on, but once he realised he was going to have to be physical, his tenacious streak came out. Charlton simply could not knock either Defoe or Berbatov off the ball today. It was great to see the once-familiar sight of Jermain Defoe bearing down on goal and letting fly from his favourite spot, just outside the box. He used to score frequently from there and that's two now this year.
Berbatov was my MotM, for reasons I posted above. Aside from his two goals and one assist, he was the one player that Charlton simply could not cope with. Every time Berbatov would twist and turn and hang onto the ball in or near the box, the Charlton defence visibly panicked, people got pulled out of position and openings appeared for other Spurs to threaten the goal. If he keeps up this level of play, we will have one of the 2 or 3 best strikers in the country.
Finishing. That's what's been missing. That's what we have to start doing away from home.
