What must Son do to be exempt from the South Korean military draft in legal boundaries, while being able to keep his Korean citizenship?

Good read....

Frankly if he gets drafted... I am sure they will find some way to get him in the military team in the K league. It will both gain huge interested in the team and the league, as well as keep their best player playing football at a decent level.

I don't see Korea doing well in the Asian games. We might let him go for the tournament ... but other teams are not likely to feel the same way. Plus the player himself might not want to go for it.

At the end of the day. I expect the government to grant him some kind of delay in enlisting. Maybe when he is past his prime...

<What will happen if he ultimately decides to ignore the draft?>

He will have extreme difficulty living in Korea's society. The society absolutely upholds military duty to be the most "fair". It's ironically the most complete form of Korean social justice. To endanger possibly the most "fair" thing in this (still) corrupted country right now will anger many people.

If he has the courage, he can decide to emigrate to a new country. But by doing that he will never be able to set foot on South Korean soil ever again.

If I was him i'd emigrate on the principle that if my country would actively try and sabotage my extremely lucrative career because of it's arse-backward cultural norms and bureaucracy, then it's a country worth being a citizen of. The fact the South Korean government wants to take one of their best ever players, at the prime of his career and sit him in an office shuffling papers is just farcical.

Surely this most send a message to the world, don't buy, recruit South Koreans.

I kind of agree but he's a very proud South Korean so I don't think he will do that. We knew the situation when we bought him, I'm sure our board have something up their sleeve.

Maybe he doesn't mind, or even wants to do his service.

True, which is why I said "If I were him". Who knows what he thinks and if he has a lot of family back home who will face hardship or repercussions if he did that?

Two years full-time civillian service will undoubtedly ruin his career. Even if he can try and rejoin another club at 29 it's unlikely he'll have the same success as before. So I think it's unlikely he's relishing this.

The real loser here is the country of South Korea if it's willing to ruining the careers of it's most talented citizens on a point of principle. I understand it needs a robust military to couteract North Korea, but I don't know how Son shuffling papers in a government cubicle will achieve that.

Elvis was taken at the prime of his career, which upset lots of people.
Without knowing too much about it, perhaps superstars going through this helped end national service for everyone in the US.

I remember Herc's alluding to the fact this issue was covered by Spurs, in some capacity? Something to that effect anyway.

If he did that he would be paying the price for the rest of his life it is highly frowned upon to to this in Korea. I believe a player previously tried to do that becoming a resident of Monaco and took a load of abuse until he was fortunate enough to win a get the exception via the 2002 World Cup I believe.
