I had a five year relationship with a half Korean girl. She was bullied at school with 'dog eater' comments, and I witnessed first hand the same abuse, and the emotional effects of being reduced to a stereotype seemingly fair game to ridicule (or 'banter').

Wasn't surprised that similar comments appeared in this thread, and I certainly wasn't surprised by which posters would be the first to make them.

Yeh dogs in korea isnt even a regular thing, you have to go looking for it if you want it. Many ppl here don't like it either. But the way they prep it, it tastes good lol. Either semi-spicy soup or just meat.

Dogs are by far the most popular pet in korea, and no one thinks of eating their own pets, it's like taking out your goldfish for some sushi. No..

I don't really get offended by such things but just my personal opinion, you can see a lot of ignorance with cultural topics like this, and that's fine, no one knows eveything. It's just best practice to have respect and desire to learn instead of doing the opposite and being toxic.

There's a stereotype that black folks like fried chicken. Show some to a korean and you'll have a proper contest. But you probably didnt know because theres no such stereotype, even though its truer than the misleading dog stereotype, you know what i mean? Lots of korean guys have never eaten dogs and lots of women dont even like the idea. So there u go

Your argument is the equivalent of grabbing a random girl's tits on the train and then, when she complains, rolling your eyes and saying "Jesus, it's not like I raped you". Just because it's not as racist as beating the shit out of some poor Polish bloke because UKIP have told you that's allowed now, doesn't mean it's not still racist.

As Dave-F says - it's a free country, you can say what you want. But equally, I'm entitled to point out that this kind of casual racism makes you look like a dimwit.

What a load of absolute bollocks. You can't just pick another scenario that isn't even remotely related just to try and make your point sound more reliable. You're sounding more and more self righteous with every post.

Lilbaz might be racist, I highly doubt it, but I'm certainly not. Dave F is right in that sure, it was an inappropriate joke but that doesn't make it any less funny - usually the most inappropriate jokes are the funniest. Whilst you're avoiding the news you may also want to avoid watching Jimmy Carr do stand-up, it won't end well for you. IMO, if a person laughs at a racist joke doesn't make them a racist. You can sit there and say you've never laughed at a racist joke before if you like, I won't believe you but you can say it if you makes feel better than the rest of us.

I laughed at it, I'm not ashamed to say it and I'm not gonna accept you trying to make anyone else feel bad about it if they did. It was just a joke. Let's just agree to disagree and leave it at that.

Oh and you can think i'm a dimwit all you like and I'll just go ahead and assume you have a giant rod up your arse, it's all the same to me.

It's a fair analogy - he's dismissing one act of racism as irrelevant because it's not as bad as other, worse types of racism. I'm not too worried about coming across as self-righteous on this topic, because I'm in the right. People need to be told that this sort of casual racism is not acceptable.

I'd agree with you that people can say racist things - or be amused by racist jokes - without necessarily being racist, we have a tendency towards taboo subjects...that doesn't mean that it should be accepted though.

You're entitled to laugh at it. You're entitled to not feel ashamed about it. Equally, I'm entitled to point out that it shouldn't be accepted, even if it isn't a particularly big deal in this case. Frankly I'd rather be the killjoy pointing out that snidey stereotyping isn't really on than the bloke casually abusing an entire race for a cheap laugh.
