Superb news, great player.

"Spurs have confirmed that following his holidays after the World Cup, Son will now join up with the rest of the squad for their pre-season tour of the United States."

I thought he had to play in the Asian games?

So the club and Son must have come up with a plan to deal with the military service problem.

Spurs will miss him later in August, and possibly in September, but there’s no doubt he will be an important member of the squad when he comes back from international duty. The soccer part of the tournament in Indonesia will run from August 14th until September 1st.

Those Asian Games are crucial for Son, and now for Tottenham too. If the South Koreans win gold then they will be exempt from military service in their homeland. If they don’t, then that conscription is still looming in the future. It would probably come into effect before 2023, but there could also be a clause in this new contract that deals with that issue.

I read he could request a delay for his military service until June 2020 and possibly play in the Olympics of that year to try again for the exemption.

Love Sonny. He's quick, direct and he scores goals, something not enough of our players do. Keep him long term it's good news.
