You’re the one who bought in the length of time a concept has been around into a conversation about somethings morality, not me.

Dunno why your getting so angry about it, I just think forcing people into the military is wrong, even if you disagree and think its justifiable it’s not crazy enough to justify you trying to ad hom me.

Also quite a weird/dangerous precedent to set that a country can defend itself however it sees fit and other people (especially if they’re PrOgGrEsSiVe) can’t criticise that)

Im not angry. I just think you are being a little judgmental, TBH, about how certain cultures different than yours view service, especially South Korea since they have a legitimate need for an immediate, strong defense. And you keep bandying about those words backwards and progressive but Scandinavia, which probably has the most progressive liberal democracies in the world has mandatory service, so maybe it doesnt fit as neatly into the backwards-progressive spectrum as you imagine.

Ok weird hill to die on, as long as you never criticise a country for any action it takes to defend itself from perceived threats (USSR annexing of Eastern Europe in the last century, creation of the third reich etc), don’t want to be critical of other cultures!

You mention Scandinavian countries like as a liberal it will cause my wiring to short circuit. Yes it is still backward that Scandinavian countries employ this, not sure why it would matter what country it is or what you’re trying to imply. Its simply whether you think the govt has the right to send people to their possible death against their will, if you do it’s fine we just have a difference of morality, I’m not going to try and ad hom you about it like you did.

Btw you bought up Progressive not me

Thought I was fortunate that our (UK) national service finished before I was old enough to be made to do it.
But seeing the lack of responsibility (towards others) and the behaviour of a lot of our youngsters since then I wish I had done it and it was still in force.

National Service was not a way of forcing lads to go to war it was meant to be a way of teaching them discipline and the correct way to behave with other human beings. AFAIAC.

Sorry, still makes no sense to me. They give the exception for individual Olympic medals don't they? Becoming arguably the best Asian player of all time is as much of an achievement for their nation as any gold medal, imo.
I agree it's mad, but an individual winning an Olympic medal has done all they've done in an individual discipline, whereas winning a gold for football requires the whole team. There is a rationale behind it.

August 4, 2015: 2 S. Korean soldiers wounded after N. Korea secretly lays landmines on the southern side of the border
March 31, 2014: N. Korean drone crashes in S. Korea
March 24, 2014: N. Korean drone crashes in S. Korea. The onboard camera contains pictures of S. Korean military installations along the border
February 26, 2014: N. Korean warship crosses into S. Korean waters
November 23, 2010: N. Korea fires artillery at S. Korea. 4 S. Koreans are killed, 16 wounded, 70 houses destroyed
March 26, 2010: S. Korean naval vessel, the ROKS Cheonan, sunk by a N. Korean sub which kills 46 S. Korean sailors

I can't imagine why the S. Koreans want to maintain a system whereby able-bodied men receive military training and can be called upon to defend their country if needed.

You honestly wish people were still forced to join the military against their will? I don’t know if people understand what they’re saying. People are literally sent to prison in Korea if they refuse.

Every generation always thinks the generation after them is more out of control but say you’re right, if the only way we can install discipline/respect or whatever is forcing kids to become trained killers then society is more fucked then anyone thought.

My point was that youngsters would have learned to respect authority and discipline and, as such, be more considerate to others.
