The poster I quoted said it was backwards and not even Saudi or North Korea had national service. My point is that list of countries with national service can hardly be described as backward. I've a couple of Greek mates who both had to go back and do their 9 months in the army and although they weren't keen at the time they loved the experience once they'd returned to the UK. They aren't being sent to war, just military training. Personally at 19 I was raving my nut off every weekend and so would have hated going, looking back it could have been a positive experience though.
Austria
Cyprus
Denmark
Egypt
Finland
Greece
Iran
Isreal
North Korea (ok this is backward but maybe the poster should have used google ;))
Norway
Russia
Switzerland
Taiwan
Thailand
that is not even all of those listed on Wiki.

All backward countries then

Although I doubt some of the Scandinavian countries rules are as tight as Korea’s seem to be, hence why Eriksen isn’t being called by Denmark

If my mate could get out of military service in Turkey by only doing a month in a military office then surely Sonny can get out of this...

Luckily for Denmark (and Eriksen), they don’t share a border with a country led by an unstable “dynasty” which has never hidden its enjoyment at rattling sabers. [insert Germany joke]

Let’s fight the fuckers. We are Tottenham. This is England.

We can teach him how to eat noodles quickly.

He's going to need 1 to 1 and 1/2 months of vacay to recover from the accumulated fatigue of playing that much football in year.

I don't know about that, we Swedes have had our eyes on Denmark for quite some time. Sweden and Denmark hold the record in time spent at war between two nations.

Nothing backward about national service. It could easily be argued it would be a huge benifit in the U.K. It would give all these feral kids some discipline and structure.
I guess we are going to have to start the season without Sonny. If he can’t get an exemption his career is going to end several years early.

Yes, let's teach feral kids how to kill people with their bare hands AND use lethal weapons, that'll sort them out.

Nothing backward about forcing people to join the military against their will?

Ok.....

It's even more backwards when you consider Son doesn't live in SK, earn money from a SK employer, pay tax in SK or, other than play for the National Team, have anything much to do with them.

I personally think the world should be lessening the militaristic nature, not forcing people in to it just because they were born somewhere. If it was here and I was told I had to take 2 years off work I'd go abroad and never come back, F the country and the army.
IF we as a country came under significant threat and more bodies were required, if I was needed, I'd not commit treason.

Why doesn't Son just domicile himself in the UK? He could easily find himself an English girl to marry and start a family with.

Whilst I think about it, have Spurs always had a large South Korean following at games or is it purely Sonny and being able to get tickets at Wembley that I've noticed an increase ?

They aren’t Spurs fans, they’re Son fans. Most will stop coming when he’s no longer here.

its called a draft, been around for ages. Id argue a volunteer military takes advantage of the poorer echelons. the average American would be much less supportive of military adventures if we had a draft here. No skin in the game.

I had noticed them at the lane prior to last season. No doubt that they're fans of Son. I think they add a little something different to match days though, they're so different to the usual football crowd, especially the older generation.
If Son has a long and successful career at Spurs I see no reason why, when he's left, they don't stay Spurs fans.

I started being a Spurs fan because of Klinsmann - I didn't change to become a Bayern Munich fan.

Metalhead

But that's a debate for another thread.....

That's a fair point. The Vietnam war probably had a profound effect on the American psyche.

I’m well aware that it’s been around for ages, hence why I called it backwards, not sure why that is any kind of defence of it? Should we have kept slavery and women not being able to vote they were around for centuries?

Call it draft or call it forcing people to go to war against their will it’s barbaric

Needs must - certainly in the case of South Korea. Defending a free country against an aggressive dictatorship right at the border demands sacrifices of all members of that society. Freedom comes at a price - a lesson we seem to have forgotten over here...

sex is been around for ages, hence its backwards?

SK is still at war with NK and the most heavily fortified frontier in the world is 25 miles from their capital. Its not up to me to tell them the proper way to defend their country although a progressive guy such as yourself living in safety 12,000 miles away probably has some good ideas.

So the price for freedom is losing your freedom?

You’re the one who bought in the length of time a concept has been around into a conversation about somethings morality, not me.

Dunno why your getting so angry about it, I just think forcing people into the military is wrong, even if you disagree and think its justifiable it’s not crazy enough to justify you trying to ad hom me.

Also quite a weird/dangerous precedent to set that a country can defend itself however it sees fit and other people can’t criticise that (especially if they’re PrOgGrEsSiVe)
