15:14 SUBSTITUTION- Southampton 2-3 Tottenham
Tim Sherwood has five minutes left to see out his first win in charge of Spurs. So what does he do? He takes off one striker in Roberto Soldado and puts on another one in Jermain Defoe. It's a brave move, and I like it, but will it pay off?
14:52 GOAL - Southampton 2-3 Tottenham - Emmanuel Adebayo (64 mins)
My 10-8 scoreline prediction is suddenly looking good. Spurs react to that Saints equaliser by throwing men forward and, despite Southampton having plenty of men back, the ball breaks for Emmanuel Adebayor inside the box to fire past Paulo Gazzaniga. Poor defending, but a great finish and Adebayor dances with joy as he celebrates.
14:47 SUBSTITUTION- Southampton 2-2 Tottenham
Ah, that scoreline did not stay the same for long. Adam Lallana times his run superbly to get behind the Spurs defence on the right of the box and, after he draws Hugo Lloris from his goal, squares the ball for Rickie Lambert to stroke it into an unguarded net. A brilliantly worked team goal.
14:47 GOAL - Southampton 2-2 Tottenham - Rickie Lambert (60 mins)

14:42 GOAL - Southampton 1-2 Tottenham - Jos Hooiveld og (55 mins)
It's been a weekend of own goals in the Premier League and now Saints defender Jos Hooiveld has joined the party. Danny Rose and Christian Eriksen combine down the left and, from Rose's low pull-back, Hooiveld attempts to clear at the near post but instead diverts the ball past Paulo Gazzaniga. Agony for him, ecstacy for Spurs interim boss Tim Sherwood.
14:38 SUBSTITUTION- Southampton 1-1 Tottenham
Mousa Dembele limps off and he is replaced by a 19-year-old making his first-team debut. Nabil Bentaleb is on instead.
HALF-TIME - Southampton 1-1 Tottenham
14:10 Yellow Card - Sigurdsson
Spurs have improved as this game has gone on, and certainly since their interim boss Tim Sherwood came down from the stands. They are putting the tackles in too, with Gylfi Sigurdsson becoming the first name to go into Chris Foy's book after lunging in late on Steven Davis.
13:55 GOAL - Southampton 1-1 Tottenham - Emmanuel Adebayor (26 mins)
What a strike this is, to put Tottenham level and send Tim Sherwood into a frenzy on the touchline. Emmanuel Adebayor sends Roberto Soldado galloping down the left as Spurs break but Saints have men back and there doesn't seem to be much danger. That changes when Soldado whips in a delicious cross which Adebayor reaches first to direct a stunning volley past Paulo Gazzaniga. What a way to get his first league goal of the season.
13:42 GOAL - Southampton 1-0 Tottenham - Adam Lallana (13 mins)
Saints have probably shaded the first 10 minutes or so, and now they have a goal to show for it. Danny Fox makes good ground down the left before squaring the ball for Adam Lallana, and his low shot from outside the area beats Hugo Lloris and rolls into the bottom corner. You wouldn't call that effort a daisy-cutter, but Lallana did not really get hold of it. Lloris will be disappointed.

Tottenham Hotspur will be looking to end a turbulent week on a positive note when they travel to St Mary's to take on a Southampton side also desperate to return to winning ways.

Andre Villas-Boas was dismissed as head coach following last Sunday's calamitous 5-0 loss at home to Liverpool, and the focus has already turned to who will replace him at the helm.

Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino is among those to have been linked with the vacant role, although he insists there has been no contact from Spurs yet.

Pochettino is reportedly in the frame after earning rave reviews for his work at Southampton, although the last few weeks have been rather more difficult following a five-match winless run.

Southampton's performances have still been impressive in the past couple of games as they have drawn 1-1 with Manchester City and Newcastle United, but they have dropped to ninth in the standings and will be determined to pick up three points to set them up for the rest of the festive schedule.

All eyes will be on Tim Sherwood in the Tottenham dugout after he was handed the reins on a temporary basis following Villas-Boas' departure.

He took charge for the midweek Capital One Cup tie against London rivals West Ham United and suffered an agonising 2-1 defeat as two late goals knocked them out of the competition.

It was another frustrating day after the embarrassment of the heavy loss against Liverpool, which left Spurs seventh in the table and five points adrift of a place in the top four, with a goal difference of minus six.

Tottenham

Interim Spurs boss Sherwood can welcome back skipper Michael Dawson from suspension after he missed the midweek League Cup loss to West Ham, but Paulinho is still banned following his red card against Liverpool.

Andros Townsend is out with a hamstring injury, while Younes Kaboul and Jan Vertonghen are also still missing, as Sherwood considers making changes to the side that faced West Ham.

Emmanuel Adebayor started alongside Jermain Defoe in attack and will be hoping to keep his place after scoring a fine goal.

Southampton

Nathaniel Clyne will be assessed ahead of the clash with Tottenham after returning to training for Southampton following a hamstring injury.

Adam Lallana and Morgan Schneiderlin came on as half-time substitutes in last weekend's draw at Newcastle and are likely to return to the starting XI.

Artur Boruc (fractured hand), Victor Wanyama (calf) and Danny Fox (hamstring) remain sidelined.

Southampton full-back Nathaniel Clyne has returned to training following a hamstring injury and will be assessed.

Captain Adam Lallana began on the bench last weekend because of a minor injury, but could reclaim a starting spot.

Tottenham winger Andros Townsend is ruled out with a hamstring injury.

Midfielder Paulinho serves the second game of a three-match ban, but skipper Michael Dawson is available after serving a suspension in midweek.

preview.jpg

A chaotic week of defeat and upheaval at Tottenham isn't about to get any easier with this trip to the south coast to face Southampton.

It all started with that 5-0 drubbing at home to Liverpool last Sunday and while commentating on the match it struck me at the time how poor Tottenham were on the day, even allowing for the absence of half the regular defence through injury and Liverpool's excellent performance.

Since then we've seen Andre Villas-Boas swiftly sent on his way, Tim Sherwood minding the shop in the interim and West Ham scoring twice in the last 10 minutes ofWednesday's League Cup quarter-final to compound Tottenham's week of woe.

Sherwood wasn't sure if he'd be taking the team for this one when asked following the midweek cup exit, but I think we can assume he will, while the hierarchy continue the search for a successor.

Lying in wait on Sunday lunchtime will be a Southampton team who've impressed many this season, but have hit a bump in the road lately and are without a win in their last five league games.

Failure to beat Spurs will equal their longest run without a victory under Mauricio Pochettino. But in recent years this has been a fruitful fixture for them, with Saints winning five of the six encounters between the clubs at St Mary's.

However, it was Tottenham who came out on top last season, winning this corresponding game 2-1, and they go into the weekend with the Premier League's joint best away record.

Tottenham are looking for a third win in a row over Southampton but victories at St Mary's are hard to come by. Southampton have only conceded six goals at home all season and three of those came in one match against Aston Villa, who inflicted their only home defeat of the season so far.

Head-to-head

  • Tottenham won 2-1 away to Southampton last season but they have lost their five other matches at the St Mary's Stadium without scoring.
  • Spurs are chasing a third successive win against Saints.
Southampton

  • Saints kept six clean sheets in their first nine league games, but have failed to keep a shut-out in their subsequent seven matches.
  • They have failed to win their last five top-flight games (D2, L3). If they don't beat Spurs it will equal their longest winless run under Mauricio Pochettino.
  • Southampton have not won any of the eight Premier League matches in which they conceded the opening goal this season (D5, L3).
Tottenham Hotspur

  • Andre Villas-Boas won 29 of 54 league matches in charge of Spurs (D12, L13).
  • He had a higher win percentage (53.7%) in Premier League matches than any other permanent Tottenham boss.
  • Spurs have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last six Premier League matches, conceding a total of 16 goals.
  • They have claimed 16 points from their eight away games this season. Prior to this weekend, that was the joint best record in the top flight (with Arsenal).

I'd happily take a point
A win would be fantastic
More importantly it would be nice to see us playing with a bit of cohesion
If we get another battering then we really are up Winnie the Pooh creek

Southampton 1-2 Spurs, Saints current form isn't too good, with Dawson available at least Capoue can get back into MF to give us some bite if Sandro is still injured.
Ade back in the fold increases our goal threat as well.
