Madness. They have no choice but to appoint his assistant and pick up where he left off, it was working so keep at it.

20 matches unbeaten as Spain manager and he gets fired 24 hours before the World Cup. Absolutely nuts.

This is completely bonkers! Like I've mentioned earlier, it's idiotic of the manager to sign for a team just days before he's ready to lead the Spanish side in the WC. What were he and his agent thinking...

Great decision!! :ROFLMAO: This could have a huge impact on them now, you're effectively throwing out all of your preparations. They'll need someone who's just going to step in and change nothing.

The whole team would be in a state of disarray

Good news for the rest of us. But what a hateful club RM is. They must be even hated by their own fans after this move

Real Madrid really are absolute scum when it comes to getting their man. All under the table, tapping up and then telling the employer five minutes before the announcement is disgraceful.

I don't see what the problem is TBH, its not like he would take his eye off the ball, plus how many national team first teamers play for Madrid. The guy was unbeaten as Spain manager with a real chance of going a long way. Spanish FA cutting their nose off to spite their face.

Spanish FA statement says there was no approach by Real officials and that they only found out he had taken the job 5 mins before Real announced it. I get that they're pissed off, but he was focused on the WC, so why get rid? They've now put themselves in a potentially embarrassing situation.

It was completely the right call.
There's a quote from the spanish FA that says "Winning is important, but doing things the right way is above that."

Real Madrid are the most disgusting club in existance. They even tap their national team manager. Unbelievable

The problem isn't that he's taking over at Madrid, the problem is the manner he and Real have secretly negotiated without the FA's knowledge.

The FA is, to a degree, cutting off their nose to spite their face, but I totally understand why.

But the only losers will be the NT and the Spanish FA, everyone hates Madrid anyway, morally the right choice maybe but they have fucked themselves over hard. Ramos wanted him to stay as manager for the WC and Ramos has a massive influence in the dressing room.

Tapping up happens all the time, its part of the game obviously wrongly, but for the sake of their chances in the WC they should have swallowed their pride and said nothing.

I can understand why they have done this. If he and Real have treated them with contempt and negotiated all this on the quiet, I'm not surprised they have taken away the honour of leading his country into the World Cup.

Tbh Spain's way of playing football is so ingrained, the core of the squad know it inside out, it probably doesn't need much of a hand on the tiller. If this was going to happen to any team, theirs is probably one of the best placed to absorb it.

I don't think Lopetegui was influential in the way Spain played.

Time will tell, depends how the dressing room have reacted to it, Ramos wanted him to stay on, a big part of the dressing room in Madrid, wouldn't be surprised if there was a somewhat dense atmosphere.

imo it causes an disturbance within the group that he's announcing that he's leaving after the WC just days before kick-off. Knowing the spanish press, they're gonna be all over this matter and that's attention the Spanish association don't want.
And of course the Spanish football association feeling backstabbed. He just signed a new extension

Mental, couldn't believe it when I saw it. I can only think, like others have mentioned, that they will appoint his assistant unless he's gone too in which case surely there wouldn't be enough time to appoint a new manager?
Imagine they played the tournament without a manager at all. That would be a first surely. I'm not even sure that would be allowed.
