    RUMOURS:

Spurs have had a £2 million bid rejected by WBA for defender Curtis Davies.

    Source: all3points

Davies, a long term target for the north London club was rated at around £8 million by the Baggies last season who are holding firm over their desire to retain the promising youngster.

Davies value will have dropped after WBA fell out of the Premiership and a bid of around £4 million is likely to test the resolve of the midlands club.

Spurs boss Martin Jol is keen to add to his central defensive options and Davies remains his number one target in this area.

£2m seems a bit cheeky but its a starting point.

I really hope we get Curtis, he looked quality last year in the Prem, addmittedly i haven't seen to much of him this season but for anything less then 5mill, He would be a brilliant signing. Can also play RB which is always handy.

Offer them 2.2 and be done with it!

Typical spurs to start our bidding so low. Would be a good signing, though not sure how happy he'd be behind ledley and daws!

I don't think there's anything wrong with testing the waters. Relegation from the Prem must be hard times for the wage structure and revenue for WBA.

It is cheeky but that's business and if WBA are in dire straits then they'll accept or work towards a more realistic figure.

As for Curtis being happy? If he has the right attitude and mentality then he'll see we're building something special and there will be opportunities for him to play and prove his worth.

Not sure he would be behind Ledley and Daws.

He's arguably just as talented as they are. What with injuries and suspensions, I think all three of them would get plenty of matches and, despite Davenport's excellent (career-defining?) match yesterday, I would feel perfectly comfortable with 3-4 top-class central defenders at the club.

At the risk of stating the bleeding obvious, in life there are some people who are good at buying and selling and some who aren't. Because most of us used to fixed prices it's sometimes difficult to get you head around bargaining.

I'm no expert - my working world involves a bit of it and of couse anyone who's ever bought a house or been to parts of the world where prices are fluid knows something about it - but mostly I reckon it's about deciding what you want to pay and the best way of getting close to that price...

Who's ever negotiated for something and felt chagrin when the other guy bites your hand off at a price you'd have settled for before? The best way to avoid it is to start low, bargain as if your life depended on it and be prepared to walk away if it goes too high.

We're particularly good at it and that's largely down to Levy and the people he appoints.

Man City are suffering now for paying too much in the past... they got the men they wanted at the time but in the long run it's left them weaker. You could say the same of Newcastle.

We on the other hand might miss out on the man we want sometimes, or have to wait a bit longer to get him, but in the long run we're always going to be there or there abouts and fans of other teams are left scratching their heads about how we picked up Lennon, or Robinson, or Huddlestone, or Carrick, or Dawson for a song and they didn't. And how we managed to get players like Andy Reid and sell them on for a profit despite them hardly performing. In fact it's often too difficult to grasp, which is why you so often see other managers or journalists banging on about how much we've spent in the last three years despite the fact we've probably made a profit on purchases and sales.

It's a real art and one of the reasons why each year that goes by under Levy we get stronger, making a profit despite a medium sized ground and splashing out on big players while other sides fall by the wayside or wait for a sugar daddy to come along and buy them out of the hole they've got stuck in.

I would also be happy to have 3-4 top-class central defenders at spurs. But, in my opinion defence is a position you shouldn't rotate unless it's completely nessasary. So would a player who has aspirations of playing international football be happy playing 1 in 3/4 games? Someone like Tony Gardner who is a reasonable premiership player, makes in my opinion a better squad player, as they won't be unhappy with the situation!

How do they know the value?

Are they privvy to this info? Pure speculation.

i think we should buy gareth bale as well as davies in jan, but let them stay at their clubs till the summer to keep west brom and southampton sweet
  10. roguepsi
I don't think this is allowed. That would technically be loaning the players back to the teams and I don't think that can happen immediately. I could be mistaken tho.

Davies would be a good signing but I won't hold my breath on him coming.
  11. Rooga
Isn't that what we did with Huddlestone though? He stayed at Derby 'til the end of the 2004/05 season, properly joined us that summer, then last season we loaned him out on occassion to teams like Wolves.

Although we weren't allowed to do it when we bought Robbo from Leeds?

    Can anybody clear this up?
  12. mawspurs
I am guessing but it is probable that Huddlestone signed a pre-contract which meant the deal would go through but hadn't yet. As his then current deal hadn't expired it meant he could carry on playing for Derby until it did at the end of that season.

I doubt that it is possible to do that kind of thing in all cases though.
  13. smithym
we could always say to WBA that if we can agree a fee and tie up the deal it will be from the 1st July 07, meaning that they can keep him for the season and we get him in the summer. everyones a winner
  14. Langers
I think it was because Leeds arready had three players on loan.
  15. Bilko
I`m doubtful of this happening because of the tremendous competition for players this Jan-Potsmouth.West Ham.A.Villa e.t.c.

We have enough people up front and in the middle of the park. But we are somewhat short at the back. Davenport is good enough, but in my opinion Gardner isn´t. If a long term injury happens to King or Dawson, we are in trouble. Curtis Davies would be a perfect buy. Can´t see him coming for 2 million, though. Probably worth 4 or 5.
  17. sundancer
If we can get him for low money and he is happy to play 4th choice fine, but for me Davenport is a better player.
  18. engcanspur
Davies for 2.5 million + Gardner is a good deal.
We need to get Mathew Taylor from Ports hes perfect, left sided player who can play either full back or outside mid, and only scores unreal goals. Bale and Giles would be nice too for the reserve squad for now.
