On the up-side, one sign that this journalist has made at least a bit of effort here is the reference to Pochettino having "asked White Hart Lane director of football Franco Baldini to investigate the chances of a successful bid."

There is a general policy with made-up-bullshit transfer stories, especially in tabloids, that the journalist always personalises the transfer by naming the first team coach or manager as the one who is going to sign X or Y player. I think they do this (a) from laziness and (b) to attract the maximum number of hits from non-fans of the club, by name-checking someone they would have heard of.

The fact that Baldini gets a mention here suggests that the story might not be totally fabricated in this case.

If you say so! Or maybe the hacks are beginning to adopt a more sophisticated method of ball-shitting us. A little more detail, despite no actual quotes might convince the moderately sceptical reader etc.

Putting the veracity of the article to one side, I'd actually be rather pleased if this came to fruition, as I was rather impressed by him in Brazil.
The guy is definitely a talent.

Perhaps I haven't been clear. I think this story is probably fabricated. OK? But it is unusual for a tabloid journalist to bother to name-check the Director of Football in one of these 'linked with' stories.

In my opinion its bull shit, that's all I was getting at.

That's fine, but the concept that a transfer rumour is bs based on no quotes is deeply flawed.

No one within either club is going to make an open quote.

Essentially the best judge on transfer rumours is the source.

Daily Mirror isn't always full of bs but the writer Steve Bates isn't someone I've picked up on for having good info so for now I'll assume there's no interest.

I believe the term is "Bullshit"........not that it's important.

I didn't get to see much of the World Cup, but whenever I saw Holland I thought Depay was completely ineffective. So if this rumour is completely without foundation I won't be too upset about it.

Neither was Ronaldo. Don't think too much can be read into World Cup performances alone.
