I've read too many posts from people taking things from the newspapers as facts, when they include no quotes (or no quotes backing up the main message of the article). Even if they do, it may well be a misquote.

I don't want to tell anyone what to do, but I'd just like to advise you all not to take anything from newspapers or websites (unless it's the official website) as facts.

Threads I have come across include newspaper articles about players such as Berbatov, Ghaly and Taarabt among many others. I've seen too many people turn on these players just because of what was written about them, even though there's no evidence against them, so please take a moment to realise that what you are reading is certainly not factual and is more often than not purely conjecture.

I'd just like you to keep this in mind. Thanks.

Who is flatters to give me advice? He can fuck off! If I want to believe that page three girls have opinions about world affairs I will. If I decide that "Berbatovs at war!" is an accurate headline it is. I reckon they have guns, and grenades, and there will be proper killing.

It seems most stories now are not written by journalist, but rather by people who tell us what they think happened. A factual newspaper would go down a storm.

True but this shows your Inability to spot an accurate articall from a false one, because flatters wasnt saying not to read storys that people come up with, but not to treat them as fact, and what makes a journilists view any different then Flatters

:hello:

Just a word of dissent.

While I agree with Flatter's basic position - that just because it's there in the press does not mean it's true.

However, I don't agree with the position that 'if it's not the official club position' I won't believe it till then. It is quite clear that some of Spurs' official statements - that no one had met Ramos in Seville - were utter misinformation. All parties now spin for their 'own goals'!

I'd also like to talk about the issue of 'quotes and no quotes'.

Some people have repeatedly posted that the lack of direct quotes is either 'proof', or damning evidence, that a story is not accurately reported or just flim flam. I have no doubt that innaccurate or invented quotes do exist - red tops especially. Sometimes sources say things that are not true and the press get hammered for accurately reporting what others have said. (I'm thinking of anti - journo/beeb comments refering to reports about Ramos saying he was going to stay in Seville!)

On the other hand it is surely clear that journo's cannot always attribute comments if they are going to get either 'the inside track' or keep the trust of sources. The question is how should one deal with unattributable quotes. I know, for example, that New York Times 'in house' rules are that sources that really cannot be quoted have to be paraphrased. In short - the lack of direct quotes - means little. As do 'official statements'.

Surely a bit of common sense regarding the origin of the story is needed? The Sun vs the Grauniad?

I just don't see the point in believing anything that hasn't got enough evidence to back it up. If you think there is enough evidence, then by all means take it into consideration, but most of the time it just appears to be conjecture, which would be neither here nor there.

Flatters,

I think the issue is partly to do with how much evidence people can realistically put on the table.

I also agree that players should not be judged by what one reads in the press - we all know we play on grass!

Sadly, the broadsheets are often no better than the red-tops in this respect.

Very true. And the Grauniad has been particularly crap with their Spurs reporting in the last few years. They've come up with various 'in camp bust-ups' which havn't happened and seem to have a bit of an axe to grind Spurs-wise.

Although the level of journalism is generally better in the broadsheets than the tabloids, the level of sports journalism is normally same with the only difference being the shit headlines the tabloids use.
