Also the gooner fan who threw a plastic bottle at Dier in the same match got a £650 fine and 3 year banning order.

It was a clear, gender natural, bottle with no illegal sponsors on it so it was not as bad!

how is such a ban actually enforced? i guess if he buys a ticket online under his real name then it might get flagged but otherwise i doubt he'd have much trouble getting into a game.
Exactly, I used to have a very well known hooligan regularly sit in front of me at WHL whilst he was on a banning order.

They don't sell bananas at football matches. No one associates eating bananas with match days. Why would someone bring a banana into the stadium, if not for the exact purpose of racial abuse?

Actually can’t tell if this is a joke or not

The way he worded it was as though 99.99999999% of bananas are bought for this purpose.
If it was sarcastic it was superbly pulled off.

Who takes a banana to a game? Come on he can’t be that stupid what if someone slipped on it?

As much as I would like to give benefit of the doubt I think it’s a bit dubious he didn’t know!
The kid sitting next to him apparently, who after finishing it, disposed of the skin on the floor. Imagine if it had been a packet of pistachio nuts. Someone could have died.

Court enforced bans normally mean you have to report to the local station by half time on matchdays. So this guy's weekends are done for the next 4 years.

Club bans are not legally binding so it's just a case of being barred from a pub, it's on the club to refuse entry/sale

Should have been a lifetime ban. Fuck racists.

Only 7 people Agree with you, Says a lot about the Ruling I think, cause you are spot on, guy should never be allowed at another THFC Match again, that will send a message.

Keep this idiot of a man away from my Club FFS

Not sure this kind of punishment even works tbh.
It just fuels resentment imo.
By all means ban him, but the ignorant need education as much as punishment.

Lol!!

Loooong before some nasty knuckle draggers threw banana's at black players, they were actually food, that people ate. I literally have one on my desk right now, does that make me racist?
As Mightyspur explains and as has been explained from a witness, a kid ate the bloody thing and the silly bloke launched it in a moment of madness.
Ban him for throwing an object at any player. Don't paint him as a racist if that's not the case.

Would you ban him for life if the kid next to him ate an apple and the core got thrown?
Or an orange peel?

If they were near my house, I think the Arsenal players would have had to duck away from a flying sky remote.

My understanding is he got banned for throwing an object at a player.

The court found there was a racist element to his actions but wasn’t the basis for his banning.

So yes, he would still get banned.

I am interested to know the basis for the court stating it was a racist action but guess I will never know.

But why some people are so desperate to write off the racial element is beyond me.

Basil Fawlty voice:
Right: anyone who ever eats a banana whether it be in a stadium, or in any other public space or in the confinement of home, will be considered a racist and therefore banned from everything, everywhere.

I just assumed rightly or wrongly, that the guy had likely suffered racism himself.
It's obviously not impossible to be racist if you're not white. It's far less likely though, especially if you yourself have suffered as a result of it.

Wholly and categorically untrue.

I actually did a fair bit of reading on this yesterday afternoon (look, I’m self employed and it’s December okay, I needed to pass the time), and every bit of empirical data I could find suggested that, to some degree or another, Greeks and Cypriots are significantly more likely than Brits or Irish to harbour racist or prejudiced attitudes towards people of different ethnicities.

If you’re particularly interested, every bit of data available says the most racist country on earth is India.

Now I don’t know this guy, probably never will, and I haven’t seen enough evidence to know whether or not his actions were racist or just plain dumb.

But his nationality cannot be considered, by any stretch of the imagination, mitigating circumstances.

Because in 2018, there's more idiots than there are genuine racists*

*The sort that would actually take a banana to a football match to deliberately throw at a black player rather than mindless idiots who say silly things (Chelsea fans)

If he was that much of a racist, why is he even at a football match? Is there any team in the country he could support that only has white English players?

Has throwing banana skin even used to be considered racist? I thought the entire thing was about throwing an actual edible banana?

Don’t do it to yourself. I’d like to believe this wasn’t a racist incident because I can’t understand the stupidity of doing this but then again I can’t understand the stupidity of throwing anything onto the pitch. He’s done it now and must live with it. Hopefully it’s a wake up call to halt other stupid behaviour and more importantly make people think twice about their attitudes.
