Players by players, we do not have the worst defence. We conceded many goals under Jol because of the tactiscs. That was the main reason, and that was the reason he had to leave THFC.

I like stats - so agree that these figures are interesting - it's just the ridiculous interpretation that's wrong

(Some of) What these stats tell us about the 7 ever presents is that unsurprisingly the 'big 4' are in a league of their own when it comes both to scoring goals and not letting them in

of the other 3 (who are our main contenders for 5th best club in England, on an historical bais -IMO, perhaps along with Toon) - we've scored slighly more than Everton and considerably more than Villa - but conceded considerably more than both - so probably we are more attacking than them and definitely should look to be defending much better in the future

however to suggest our defence has been worse than say Derby Sunderland Barnsley Bradford Charlton West Ham Palace Nowrich Watford etc during the Premiership years is I repeat both wrong and indeed ridiculous - there's a reason these teams haven't been able to to consistently hack it in the Prem, they're not good enough and part of that inability will have been inferior defences (for many of them at least)

Actually thinking about it - but I haven't the energy to check - my money on the worst defence in prem history would be Swindon Town - from memory one season in the top flight and they conceded a shed load of goals.

in 93/4 Swindon conceded 100 goals from 42 games - almost 2.5 per game - unsurprisingly this is considerably worse than Spurs - we've never even come come close to conceding 100 goals in a season since the Prem started, let alone averaging 100 or even 90 per season.

I wonder if any Prem team has a worse defensive record than Swindon's - I doubt it, but am not going to do the research :)

But by the twisted logic of the headline I can say

'It's official - Arsenal have worse prem defensive record than Swindon'

yeah right

Or in the top flight for every season bar one since 1950. How many clubs can better that?

I was reading this article on newsnow at lunchtime and thought the stats lie really as clubs like Sunderland and Derby must have shipped tons more in their brief stays in the prem - it's just that they can't stay in it for long enough!

since we have always stayed up we could also say we are the most exciting club to watch in the premiership

Well Derby are conceeding 2.4 goals so far this season, and Arsenal are up next for them, I think they just may break the 100 mark.

Take out the last two seasons and it's a completely different picture though. Everyone agrees that we are on the up.
Qué?

Last season was not the best (particularly against the top 4) but the previous two seasons were two of the best defensive seasons in Spurs premiership history?

The potential is still there. I believe Ramos will return Spurs to the solid defenses of 04-06 and perhaps better, and the 1st 10 games of this season will be put down to poor timing on behalf of the board.

I like stats

I don't, they can prove whatever the writer wants them to prove.

For example - look at Arse**l's goals scored (1001) versus their goals conceeded (526). Now, 1001/526 = 1.9030418, which proves beyond all reasonable doubt that Arse**l are ****s.

Hmmm, I may be warming to this stat malarkey after all....

Just checked the tables on Wiki. Everton were relegated in 1950-51 and spent three seasons in Division Two, so since we were promoted only United have been in the top flight for as long as us. Arsenal don't count, as you say.

Overall, Everton have spent more time in Division One/the Prem than anyone but Arsenal, but they didn't get 'promoted' by handing out brown paper envelopes full of fivers.

I wonder what would happen if proof that the Arse did bribe their way into the big time turned up in some drawer at the FA?
