Tottenham have had a £7million offer for Darren Bent rejected by Charlton.

The striker is out for a month with knee ligament damage, but that has not put off Spurs boss Martin Jol.

Bent is also wanted by West Ham, with Alan Curbishley keen to link up once again with the striker he bought for just £2m from Ipswich while manager at The Valley.

Charlton boss Alan Pardew would be reluctant to lose his consistent goalscorer to a relegation rival, even though West Ham are believed to be ready to go as high as £12m but Pardew has admitted he is prepared to listen to offers.

"It sounds like his price has dropped if you're thinking £7million because £7million isn't going to touch the sides for Darren Bent," said Pardew at a press conference ahead of tomorrow's FA Cup trip to Nottingham Forest.

"This is a top-class player in my view. After watching him for just a week and a bit, he's an England player and that's how he should set his goals.

"At the moment he's a Charlton player and that's what he will stay.

"His injury at the moment gives us a problem. We cannot afford to have him out of the team for five weeks, so I'm having to assess it and weigh up all the situations and I'll have to do what's right for Charlton Football Club.

"My priority when I came here, and when he was fit, was that he was not going to go anywhere, that was categoric.

"The injury changes things. We are trying to locate a striker to replace him, so we will see. Certainly the figures for Darren Bent being bandied around are way too low."

Spurs later confirmed to Sky Sports News that the club had not made any bid for the former Ipswich Town striker.

good player as replacement for keane if he was off or mido if he was off - we wont get him, he is worth 10m probs, and we have 4 good strikers.

Don't see why we keep going for more strikers we don't know what to do with the ones we already have. I'd like to see some of our academy/reserve players get a run out to see if their any kop.
Don't get me wrong i think Bent is fairly handy but just don't think it is a position we are desperate for.
  3. UbeAstard
Ive read elsewhere that we have denied making a bid or him on Sky Sports.

Ahhhh the start of the Bent auction by the Charlton board.. gota love it aint ya, they know he wont stay if they go down and his price will drop, they wont give Pardew any cash incase they do go down so they will sell to buy.. Charlton will sell us Bent for 10 Mil in the end and Robbie will go to Villa. Personally i'd like to see Robbie stay and Mido leave but dont think it will turn out that way.

    Bullshit, except the last sentence.

Good player, maybe Charlton will be asking too much, but if we could off load Mido who hasn;t really looked that good since his return, he could be good back up for Defoe and Berby.

I'd take him for Mido considering Mido's current form.

However I still think Mido would be an asset if he could stay away from injuries and I think he could rediscover his form last autumn if Berbatov gets injured (though I'm praying he doesn't, of course) and he gets a decent run of games. And he DID score a beauty vs. Spammers just to prove he still can play.

So thanks, but no thanks. I feel confident about our strikeforce at the mo, with JD and Berbs as first choice and excellent backup (providing both Keano and Mido can stay fit)

Everybody keeps forgeting how hit and miss Defoe is. If he doesn't get service he doesn't go looking for the ball.

    Keep Keane and Berbatov

Sell Defoe to Pompey and get shot of Mido

Bent has all of Defoe's attributes without the attitude.
Defoe wouldn't hesitate to sell us out - he has done it before

What happened to the teenager we were signing from Scandinavia?

Where have you been the past year and a half? Who have you been watching? Seriously, don't you watch the matches at all?

All season, virtually every match, for virtually every minute he has been playing, Defoe has been chasing all over the pitch, tracking back, going wide, fetching the ball himself and hanging onto it with enormous tenacity, refusing to go down, beating 1 and sometimes 2 defenders, crossing into the box, even passing to Berbatov (sometimes...). He's radically developed his overall game over the past 2 years.

There's been absolutely zero "attitude" from Defoe. He looks frustrated when he can't get near the ball. That's good, that's what you want him to do. Other than that, he's been relentlessly positive, bigging up Spurs at every opportunity, talking about winning trophies this year, singing the praises of Berbatov as a strike partner, saying how much he loves the spirit in the squad... I could go on and on and on.

What does it take to get some people to pay attention to what is really in front of them, instead of seeing what their fixed ideas and prejudices make them see?

Just listened to an interview with Jol on Radio London in which he quite categorically denied this story and branded it rubbish, with hacks just wanting to fill their column inches during the transfer window. They were asking him about transfer targets and he said he didn't want to talk about who are targets were. They then asked him if Bent was one of them, and he said, OK I'll make an exception for Bent and tell you that we have not made any bid for Bent, nor will we, as we are happy with all the strikers that we have.

He also stated (quite vehemently in fact) that there was no way Keane would be leaving. He said Robbie loves it at Spurs (his exact words), he's just signed a new 4-yr contract, which shows how much he loves it, and he's not going anywhere.

So that's that then. End of speculation on these 2 players please.

What a load of nonsense. If Defoe was as selfish as you claim, he'd have gone 12 months ago. The bloke has been 100% first class, attitude-wise, since he came to Spurs. Not once has he talked of leaving.

OK he made a mistake when at West Ham, but that shouldn't haunt him for the rest of his life. He was very young.

I suggest you look at the facts and not recycle cliched tabloid myths.

Hah, Dag Alex Olsen? He's 17, maybe 18, but if he ever makes the grade it won't be before next year (2008), and that's at the very earliest. He has never played footie at a higher level than the Norwegian Second Division (equiv. to League 1), where the actual standard of play is Conference North/South standard at best.

Disagree with everything else you say btw. Yes, Defoe is a bit hot and cold, but if he was wanting to go he would've gone last season.

Heh, good point. From what I have heard, though, there was more to that story than appeared in the papers. Apparently, Jewell was leaving very shortly after the game and Chimbonda had been told that, if he wanted to get his transfer request in, he had to give it to him before he left.

Puts a somewhat less disrespectful slant on events.
