Hi all,

Ive been a Spurs fan since 1989. Moved to Dubai about 3 years ago. No one seems to support Spurs here - all of them United or Liverpool supporters. All games are shown live on Showtime. So its just me and my long suffering missus.

Hi Rupert, we assume that you're in Dubai, right? Many Spurs fans over there? Where do you meet to watch matches?

Rupert, my wife and son and I are thinking of moving out there this year. I might have the opportunity to move with my current employer, but otherwise I will change jobs.

I am an Chartered M&E design engineer by trade, but also cover facilites management and the suchlike.

Any tips?

I've spent a fair bit of time in Dubai, some things to consider before making a permanent move:-

1. Its very very hot during the summer
2. Very class orientated
3. Roads are as busy if not busier than ours
4. It is a building site!
5. Loads of places show football.
6. Not a place to go if you dont like shopping.
7. Starting to charge VAT soon
8. Even though there is no income tax other tax makes up for it

Just come back from there and watched the CC Final in the Hotel.

Loved it, defo moving out, whole shabang. Understand the weather / traffic / building site issues and dont care. After all, I am in the construction industry!

Cant believe the price of wine though, unbelievable! Especially compared to other spirits / beer. We're going for a lifestyle change, fed up of London.

As long as I have SC, I'll be fine.

Ive been dubai twice, great place and great lifestyle. Very safe place to live and very lively and buzzing late late into the night.

Beautiful hotels, beaches, shopping centres and soon enough the city with the worlds biggest...well just about everything.

Have just landed a job there at Gulf News. Will only be there from Jan 09-Jan 10 or thereabouts, but need the money and think the change will do me good!

Anyone interested in showing me around, pm me and we can get together when I get out there.

By the way, my editor said Sharjah was a decent place to live, both in terms of safety and financially. Anyone know anything about that?

Cheers!

From I understand each of the seven Emirates has their own pro's and con's. Dubai definately seems to be the most relaxed and westernised of them all. I think Sharjah has some stricter rules on things we might consider the norm.

Also depends where you are working, but check out the commute. Being the wrong side of the river really matters. You dont want to be 2hrs of traffic each way every day.

Gulfnews is in the heart of town. You better off getting a place in Dubai.

Check out the classifieds in your own paper actually. They have decent listings and you can get a feel of rent costs and so on. gulfnews.com

Ok, quick update. I turned down the job because the paper wanted to keep hold of my passport as a matter of "company policy." Huh? Weird. The offer was excellent, but no-one I know said go for it. So, I left it alone. That practice is even illegal in the UAE and Gulf News reported on it! Man...

Anyway, thanks for all your advice guys.

Hi Azrael,

A good place to go could be the Habtoor Grand. I stayed there last Feb and watched the Cup Final and there were plenty of us there. How many were on holiday I dont know. But its worth a try.

I live here now and may well end up going there myself as I might not have my sattelite sorted by then....

There are loads of places with live footy. I have cable at home, but I used to go to a Sports pub in the Ramee Hotel near Maktoum bridge. Nice place, good ambiance and all the live games going on simultaneously.

SLS, you should get Showtime. They pretty fast - deliver in a day
