Redknapp wants to snap up Nigel Reo-Coker from Aston Villa.

    Source: NOTW

Tottenham’s boss is keen to strengthen a dodgy defence.

And he has turned to a player he first tried to sign for Portsmouth five years ago.
Versatile Reo-Coker, 24, has enjoyed a successful season at right-back, though he built his reputation as a midfielder.

The ex-West Ham player has appeared in both the UEFA and FA Cups this season but not the Carling Cup, in which Spurs can make the final this week.

Redknapp means to sign tried and trusted players with fighting characters and Reo-Coker fits the bill.

The stumbling block will be Villa’s demand for at least £10million and Reo-Coker’s reluctance to swap the chance to reach the Champions League next season for a relegation scrap.

But Tottenham hope Redknapp’s personality and interest in other big names like Craig Bellamy and Wilson Palacios will do the trick.

    Yeah... big names..

Yeah, he really is going to swap the chance of cl place for a relegation scrap isnt he. Dont really take much notice of what any Sunday paper says really.

    Reo-Coker is english for Zokora.

Reo-Coker is gash. Doesn't score, doesn't create. He is really good and running around a lot, though. We've already got enough midfielders that can do just that and Didier Zokora.

I never used to like NRC but under O'Neil he has come on leaps and bounds and is amongst the leagues best defensive midfielders. He is fast, strong, hard working, and he has a smidgen of ability (enough to make the odd forward pass at least).

    Another midget though.

what we moved to the 'Rs' now..........

I like NRC, always have done. Looked a good talent at Milton Keynes, wish we had gambled on him a bit sooner when he was cheaper. A fighter, leader, looked very good for the U21s when I've seen him.

 and he has got the nickname 'Nigel Mediocre' so leave him at Villa

Well, we had the chance to pick him up when he was at WHAM but decided against it, so what's the point now that he's at a more successful club?

From Berbatov to Reo-Cockup. Oh how far we have falllen.

    nigel mediocre?? really?

It just makes me want to cackle that fans think that a regular starter for top-4 Aston Villa is not good enough for bottom-of-the-table Spurs. So many people here have a distorted idea of our status in English football. A couple of years ago, we could pick and choose top players, because we were "the next big thing". Abroad, in smaller leagues, we probably still can, because Tottenham has an enduring reputation as a "big club". But not in England.

What kind of rigidity of the brain causes so many people to keep insisting that NRC (or any one of a number of other players for clubs like Villa) is not good enough for us, when he's a first choice player in a winning team?
  13. BillyWhizz
Oh come on do you seriously think this guy will improve our team? He's had one good season at the spammers and then helped them into a relegation fight.
And he is most certainly not a regular starter for Villa, you might have noticed a ginger bloke called Steve Sidwell playing in the centre this season. The majority of Nigel Mediocre's appearances so far have been filling in at full back.

The West Ham fans gave him that nickname anyway and he used to play for them!

Exactly as with another post (from spurs_viola) on another thread, you are reading stuff I didn't write. I never said that Reo-Coker is brilliant. I said that he's playing for a team that is in the top 4.

I'm not talking about him. I'm talking about the smug attitude of some of our fans. The idea that a valued member of a squad in the top 4 is automatically beneath us, when we are (or were) at the bottom of the table.
  15. the shelf
Couldn't agree more. All you get all the time is "he's not good enough for us, he wouldn't get in a top 4 side" forgetting to mention that we haven't actually been in the top half of the league table at any time in two seasons! Yet people on this site seem to think we are likely contenders to break into the top 4 - hilarious.

Not of the quality required...won't take us to the next level (whatever that is)...typical Rednapp signing...look what we have become...won't suit our style.
  17. BringBack_leGin
Though such things are difficult to convey online, I get the impression that you are speaking with tongue firmly in cheek there?
  18. markie
If he plays right back for us like he has at Villa and gives Corluka a chance to play in the middle alongside Woodgate then this is a good idea. He is another zokora when you stick him in the middle though. (Slightly better but still poor)
  19. Coyboy
Firmly. I always think that you should always have an open mind about players we sign. Maybe they will be failures but maybe they will be nurtured into good and effective team players as the unglamorous but effective Stalteri, Lee, Tainio and Malbranque were.
