Totally depends on what you're into, mate.

You can eat at Hawker stalls for a pound and be full. However, assuming you're probably not going to just want to sit next to the side of a road and scoff down some Maggi noodles (no offence humble Hawker sellers)...

A decent restaurant in the city will probably cost about RM30 (four pound fifty) for a main course; RM10 for entree (one pound fifty), RM15 for dessert (2 pounds). I can recommend several where you can eat well for about this price.

You can certainly find cheaper, or for just a little more (total bill of about RM60-RM75 on food - you can eat really, really well.

Beer is more expensive. Maybe RM10 for a pot (half), which are advisable as the beer doesn't stay cold long. Again it highly depends where you go.

Hotels - not so sure. I know Malaysia has the cheapest 4 and 5 star hotel rooms in the country, but be warned that there are no AA or RAC ratings here. Some 5 star hotels would struggle to pass for 3 star in the UK. On the flipside, some are very swanky and at comparatively very reasonable costs. The ones right i the city are:

The Westin
Crowne Plaza Mutiara
Renaissance
Hotel Istana

or if you're trying to save a bit and don't mind occasionally sharing a lift with prostitutes, try the Federal or the Radius. They're a bit cheaper.

What days are you here, Ray? If you really haven't got a place to stay and it's between August 7th and 25th then let me know as I'm on my own in my flat (Missus and nipper in Oz). I have a spare room. Seriously. You can then save you're money.

Anyway, I'll have a word with some guys and see if they have any more ideas.

BO, you're a fucking legend.

I'm booked into the Renaissance for a period, but I don't know what days (sharing with 2 mates, RM440 per night!)

It was more food and drink I needed to know, for spending money.

And cheers for the offer of a spare room BO, I may take you up on that depending what everyone else is doing! What you up to Sunday, you gonna be around for a quick beer during the day?

You mean the 12th? Abso-feckin-lutely.

If you're central, I'd really recommend telling everyone to come to Changkat Bukit Bintang. It's a street with loads of great bars and restaurants for a range of tastes and budgets. Quite a few expats, too. Loads of good places for a Sunday brekkie/brunch.

I live just off it, and if you have a mate or two that need to crash let me know. They may have to be on the couch (unless you all fancy sharing a double bed or can cram into a babies cot - I'm sure you understand if I am reluctant to share my own :| ), but as long as you reckon they're reasonable guys, it'd be cool.

12th? No dude, I mean this Sunday!

I arrive Sunday morning. Oh, that's another good point... how far from KL airport to the Renaissance Hotel? And is the public transport system decent enough?

And I'll try and check out Changkat Bukit Bintang, but as I say, there are shit loads of us. Lots of couples, with quite a few singles, I think 27 of my friends in total. So everyone will be doing different shit at different times. And I'm sure everyone is a whole lot more organised than me (most booked their flight tickets last year, I got mine 11 days ago!) so they'll have plans, and guide books, and know what's going on. Boring fucks.

I'm actually getting really excited now, and I never get excited about shit! Woot! \o/

Ray: Chicken Rice Mate...THATS WHAT ITS ALL ABOUT.....max 10 Ringgit and you will be stuffed. For 10 Ringgit (thats less than 2 quid) you will practically get half a chicken to nosh down with rice and soup and also a drink thrown in haha

So if you really are on a serious budget, just set aside an average of RM40/day (about 7 pounds/day) that should more than cover 3 squares a day but be prepared to eat local but seeing as you live in Turkey if I remember correctly, I dont think you gonna have to worry about eating local dishes.

As B_O has said, its the liquid sustenance that will set you back a bit.

Distance is about 50-60km from airport to Hotel, you have a number of options:

1. Airport Taxi service: Approx 80 Ringgit one way...door to door, ask for the regular service not the fookin premium. The counter is right after customs looks at your bags.

2. High Speed Train, RM 35 one way. Stops at Central Station in Downtown KL. Take a city cab to Renaissance Hotel, max RM 15, Cheaper option but more pain in the arse

3. Take the bus service which I have no idea where they stop but again somewhere central, less than RM 20 I think but still got to set aside another RM 10 for the taxi from wherever you are.

The rest is up to you.

Total travel time should be in the region of 75 mins

Thanks for the advice BF, this forum came at just the right time for me!

And option 2 sounds most fun to me. Cheaper, and I like the idea of getting a train. I'm all about getting local, more than happy to try out the train rather than just getting taxis everywhere.

Final question for the time being, what's the deal with duty free? Can I bring in a load of cheap spirits from the airport? I'm assuming spirits are comparatively expensive as well? Do you have cheap local brands?

Ray. Seriously, now. Don't even think it. Unless blindness and paralysis are on your 'must try' list, leave the local spirits alone.

I think you can only bring in one bottle of spirits, but it may be two.

I'd also fully recommend the KLIA express (ekspres). quickest, easiest and cheapest. Plus, you don't risk your life with Malaysian cabbies. It goes to KL Sentral (which is tbh anything but central), but as Brakefluid says, a cab will easily get you to the Renaissance.

I can't believe it's this Sunday! My missus and Mum are leaving on Monday, so have to spend a bit of family time. Anyway, I dare say a pint would be possible, so let me know if and when you're about.

After Monday, if you're still in town, then I'm totally free.

Thanks as well to GDG

Ok BO, here are my plans as far as I know.

Wednesday 8th is all wedding stuff; a steal the Bride ceremony(?) at the Rennaisance hotel then drinks and dinner in the KL tower.

Thursday 9th we're off to the Club Med for 3 days there, then a coach brings us back to KL on the 12th.

I land Sunday 5th morning, and leave on Wednesday 15th. I think I'm booked in the the Rennaisance for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, which means I just need accommodation for this Sunday night (probably just try to check into the Rennaisance early to save fucking around) and the last couple of days when we get back from Club Med (12th, 13th and 14th)

So basically, I've got some free time, but not a huge amount. Really not sure what all my mates are planning, but we'll definitely meet up for a few beers at some point.

And when you talk about "blindness and paralysis" are we talking permanent, or temporary?

Mate, if you need it, consider me casa your castle for the 12th, 13th and 14th. I'm only a 3 minute cab ride from the Renaissance and even more central. Plus a little cheaper!

Whatever happens, don't get conned into thinking you have to go to The Beach Club. It's too expensive and while the girls are fit (in the dark) and easy, there are plenty of ladyboys around there, too. Some of which get very nasty.

As well as Changkat BB, if your buddies want a good bar in town then Qba at The Westin hotel is very cool, Finnegans on Jalan Sultan Ismail is a good Irish bar, and Bar Luna is next door to the KL Tower (Menara KL) on the roof of a building with great views of the Petronas Towers.

For clubs, Zouk is the one for the young/cool folk and Frangipani is probably the best one. Also the gay club, but certainly not exclusively so. These are only according to my mates though. I'm way to old and boring to be into clubbing.

I'll pm you later with my mobile phone number and my email and we'll see what we can arrange.

Ray, I can assure you that my offer is purely platonic and extended in the spirit of helping a fellow Yiddo and SC buddy.

Unless of course you're into.....no, no. No, of course not. Forget I said anything.
