Spurs have to believe that they can go to the Emirates Stadium next week for the second leg of the Carling Cup semi-final and get something from the game.
Being 2-0 up after 20 minutes last night they should have pushed on and gone for the kill, but by sitting back they let Arsenal back into the game and paid the price.
With the Gunners on the back foot Spurs should have been looking to turn the screw and put Arsene Wenger's youngsters out of the tie.
Part of the problem for Spurs is that it has been so long since they have tasted success over their North London rivals.
They haven't beaten Arsenal in the league since the 2-1 victory at White Hart Lane in November 1999, and Arsene Wenger has an incredible record of just one defeat from 22 derbies.
There's no doubt that this record will have weighed heavy on their minds on Wednesday night and Arsenal were allowed back into a game they should have lost.
Arsenal always seem to play well against Spurs and subconsciously that affected the way Spurs played once they went 2-0 up.
It was up to Martin Jol to change things round at half-time especially after Dimitar Berbatov had been forced off on 18 minutes.
The interval was the time to re-instil the positive approach and belief that Tottenham could win the game but it didn't happen, and you can't sit back at this level.
Spurs have to be careful that they don't finish the season in no-man's land and let European qualification slip away from them.
They haven't won a league match since Boxing Day and face Manchester United at home next.
The loss of Michael Carrick shouldn't have been keenly felt, but I think they have been undermined by their away form that has lacked belief and conviction.
Last season was a great disappointment missing out on the Champions League spot the way they did and Tottenham fans would have expected the side to kick on this term.
But for whatever reason that hasn't happened.
It hasn't helped that Martin Jol hasn't settled on his front two away from home, where Berbatov has two goals and Defoe has three, which isn't nearly enough.
Paul Robinson has also been struggling since the World Cup and then the mistake in Croatia; he hasn't been in the kind of form he would have liked.
Paul would have to admit he was at fault for Arsenal's equaliser.
But then you look across the rest of the squad and players like Michael Dawson, Pascal Chimbonda and Aaron Lennon are playing with real belief, and Berbatov has been one of the signings of the season.
Now they have the opportunity to put that right by becoming the first side to win at the Emirates Stadium.
Arsene Wenger is likely to stick with his kids next week and when you are inexperienced, as they are, there is always the possibility of an off-day.
And Spurs have to be ready to take advantage if that happens.
