Harry Redknapp has closed the door on Portsmouth striker Jermain Defoe returning to White Hart Lane but he is waiting to see if Middlesbrough will sell Stewart Downing.

Redknapp's priority in the January transfer window is a forward and a left midfielder but he expects Defoe, whom he signed for Pompey 11 months ago, to be leading an attack elsewhere.

"I think they have a massive offer from somebody for him so good luck to them, I paid about £9million for him," Redknapp said.

"He is a good player but we're not going to pay over the top for anyone."

Boro winger Downing, who is thought to be valued at around £15million, would provide balance to Redknapp's team, which currently fields two right wingers.

"I like Downing but I don't know whether Middlesbrough want to sell him," Redknapp said.

"If could find a wide-left player I would like to get one. That and a frontman would be the priority."

Although Downing would put the position of Redknapp's right wingers - Aaron Lennon and David Bentley - in the spotlight, the Spurs boss insists he does not want to let players go next month as he is short on numbers.

Redknapp also wants to bring in back-up for Heurelho Gomes, who will remain first-choice goalkeeper after turning around his early season performances when he made a string of blunders.

It is in attack where Redknapp's men have struggled in the last few weeks as Spurs have gone three league matches at home without scoring.

They head to West Brom this weekend with Luka Modric set to continue supporting a lone striker as Darren Bent and Roman Pavlyuchenko have struggled to form a partnership.

It has led to Spurs having a bid for West Ham's Craig Bellamy turned down just before Christmas.

"Bent and Pavlyuchenko were £30million and that is a lot of money to spend on two strikers and then say they can't play together," Redknapp said.

"I'm left with that problem and whether they can, I don't know."

Even though Redknapp wants a striker, he will continue fielding Modric in his free role.

"There is a shortage of quality players around the world and when you have one you have to keep hold of him and find a way of getting the best out of him," the Spurs boss added.

Meanwhile, Jonathan Woodgate believes a big team could get relegated from the Premier League this season - and he is determined to make sure it is not Spurs.

Woodgate is in the frame to return from a back injury to face West Brom when Spurs look to get closer towards mid-table.

The 28-year-old said: "The league is so tight, teams are beating each other all the time and no-one has any real form apart from the top five or six and even they have shown they can drop points.

"The rest have all been a bit inconsistent and it looks like a big team can go down, so we have to make sure it is not us and keep picking up victories."

So JD is going to Man Citeh then.

Harry is a top negotiator and tyre kicker.

Or villa think they have been linked with a bid for him in recent weeks. But would be surprised if they paid silly / massive money for him! Gutted as would have loved to have him back at the lane!

    chelski perhaps?

Yeah i guess Villa as well. They do have big money to spend if MoN really wants a player though. I don't think he would fit into Villa's current formation though, which is Young on the left, Milner on the right and Agbonlahor through the middle. OR maybe 'Arry is just bullshitting

I believe signing a LW a CB and a quality DM is more important than a a ST. We have players that can score goals and more goals will come with better balance to the team.

A good quality experienced CB is needed to replace Ledley King. Although I absolutely love this man and think he is the best CB in England, constantly having our center of defence tampered with does not breed consistency. I would love King to stay but take on a player/coach role but be a sub for us as he can also be very versatile.

A LW that can hug the line, beat their man and whip in good crosses is what we would all love to have. This is however very difficult to find for the right price. At the moment we just need a pretty decent LW who can put in a good cross and works well up and down the pitch.

This, along with a quality DM will provide the balance we need in our midfield to allow us not to score more goals and impose ourselves on teams so we don't need to buy a ST at the the moment. However saying this, I am not saying Zokora is not a quality DM, I think he has been playing very well. I just don't believe Zokora knows what his best role is. He is immensely versatile though and that is essential to have in any team.

If we sign a LW, the futures of Lennon and Bentley have been talked about. I would hope Lennon's future at the club would not be questioned as he has been our best player and is improving his final ball and overall play. People have questioned Bentley's future with us and rightly so. We payed alot of money for him and he just not performed. However I do not beilve RM is his best role.
At Arsenal, Bentley was being groomed as a possible successor to Bergkamp. This lad has all the ability to be this player However he needs to relieve some of his arrogance (which is not yet warranted), and be willing to put in hard graft and commitment to our cause. Despite saying all this I'm not sure there is room in our squad Bentley in that role

This raises more doubts over the unfortunate Dos Santos. Huge prospect but has been injured. I sadly see him being a casualty in the summer in which I see a reasonably large reshuffle (although not as exstensive as last summer).

Another reason for not buying a striker in Jan is that this transfer window is known for hikied up transfer fees, especially for strikers. So I expect to see a bit of business in the window, hopefully to help balance the team out a bit. If a striker does indeed come in I expect HR to find some striker on loan as he does not want to be done over in terms of such a high transfer this window

harry won't pay over the odds for nobody thats why he's only willing to pay 15 mil for dopey downing ;-)

You got to love the way HR does EVERYTHING through the press!

It's like he switches his interior monologue onto loudspeaker when he gets into the press room.

We know where we are with him, and he keeps it simple. And he at least seems set on finally getting a LW in.

Time will tell whether his approach and aspirations fit with THFC.
  9. DC_Boy
a striker is a must IMHO

    perhaps 2

I take all of HR's transfer statements with a chip shop full of salt

JR played it close to his chest

Harry tells us everything and in all likelihood nothing, barring the bleedin obvious :)

well, that is a shame. Would honestly love JD back at the lane.

£20 million for Defoe, Man City must be mad, will that mean Bellemy on his way to White Hart Lane,
  12. mackay59

We have been blunt up front all season.
  13. mackay59

    Blinking hope someone is.
  14. mawspurs
Where did you get the £20m and Man Citeh from? Is that confirmed?

This could be all Harry playing the game.
  15. mil1lion
It does sound like Man City, but god knows why they want someone like Defoe. With Wright-Phillips and Robinho already at the club i'd expect them to want an out and out striker in a 4-3-3 formation. Although it wouldn't surprise me if Real Madrid are linked with him. They're already being linked some unexpected Premier League players now that Ramos is in charge.
  16. infamousyiddo
think its either villa or citeh to be honest.

villa would have him to play alongside agbonlahor and to give them a bit more depth, and citeh will have him with robinho as the rest of city's strikers are cack!!!!!!

would like to have seen him come back but if we have been outpriced what can we do?????

what a difference 6 months make from eto'o, villa, capel, arshavin, milito, to craig bellamy!!
  17. MiamiYiddo
offload bentley for whatever we can get...he's crap

There's a lot of smoke screens coming out of WHL I think, so much conflicting rumour and news that I think a lot of it is intended as mis-direction.

I'm glad Harry wants a left winger and a striker, but I still think we really badly need a proper DM.
