Tottenham Hotspur have completed the signing of teenage midfielder Adel Taarabt from French club Racing Lens.

Spurs have been tracking the 17-year-old for the last four weeks and finally concluded a deal this week, which is worth in the region of 3.5 million euros.

"I can confirm that everything is tied up," Taarabt told Lens' official website. "I was in London on Monday and Tuesday to undergo a medical. Everything went well and I took the chance to put pen to paper.[al]
[IMG][/al]"I have signed with the London club for a period of five years. To be more precise, it is a three-year contract, with an option for two more years.

Taarabt has played just two minutes of first team football this season for Lens, and had become increasingly more frustrated at his lack of first team opportunities.

"It was my intention to stay at Lens until June," he continued. "But they thought it better to leave straight away after I had signed for another club.

"At Lens, I didn't have the chance to play. I want to play, it's as simple as that."

The youngster also confirmed that Spurs were not the only club interested in securing his services, with two other Premiership clubs tracking the player.

"Other than Tottenham, there were also Arsenal and Chelsea," he said. "I opted for Spurs because of their plans for me. They effectively offered to quickly integrate me into the first team to offer me maximum playing time.

"They hope to get the same from me as Arsenal did from Theo Walcott. Concerning Arsenal and Chelsea, the propositions were interesting, but as with Lens, they suggested that I spent time in the youth team and the reserves."

I was just about to post this!

He seems rather full of himself, which is a good thing, in some ways! But surely he would be nowhere near a first team squad this side of next season? If he cannot play regularly for lens then he has no chance at spurs? Or is he that good?
  2. oskathegobshite
hmmm. must be nippy if he's comparing himself to walcott?
  3. Reece
dunno where he plays either, hopefully he's good on the left wing.. we'll have to wait and see but he must be pretty decent for 3.5 million at 17. We dont waste as much money as we used to. I must say i'd like to see a few english signings now by comolli though , i dont want us turning into arsenal.
  4. FatMatt
He says he came to spurs to play

Firstly if he aint good enough to get into Lens team then he is not good enough for spurs. For example Essou-Ekotto played regually for Lens and he is having problems of his own

    Secondly he

The kid is a complete asshole. It is said, though, that his potential is limitless (as a player, not as a prick, although that too).

Clearly we can see by his words, his 'confidence'....

Anyway... why all the pro-english nationalism by posters here? I agree, its a bit nutty when a team starts NO Home nationals, but the main backbone to the team is English, plus Keane, if you note that Irish players have always been a part of the British leagues since inception, and thats good enough.

I do hope we get Matt taylor or Gale, though, even if the latter seems difficult, given that Manure and Arse are said to have a crush on him, too.

Some people just cant be pleased, i'd rather him sound confident than not, i'd rather hear him saying that the Scum and Chel$ki were interested than Watford and Reading etc etc.

If we are to attract the young talent then were going to have to take a chance by playing them when their young and hoping that they fulfill their promise.

Welcome to Spurs, hope you give us years of great service.

even if he f*cks up he will cost us only 3,5 mils which won't be the end of the world + i am sure we will get at least that for him if we decide to sell him

if he develops his potential though he will be a mega bargain and will bring joy to us for many happy years

so no doubt it's good business for now with potential to become great business :violin:

Remember Azza was mostly a bench player for Leeds. They thought he was "average" and let him go...

Not sure how anyone can say he's arrogant, he hasnt said anything apart from he was linked with 2 other Premiership sides, which is no different to alot of other players. He didnt say he was like Theo Walcott, he said Spurs hope to get the same from him as Arsenal did from Walcott. Basically, we want to buy a very talented youngster, and make him into a good player by bringing him in through the 1st team. He sounds confident and he didnt get on with alot of players at Lens, which is one of the reasons they are selling. Not because he isnt good enough.

If it's a 'done deal' - then welcome on board Adel - hope you turn out to be the biz - bonne chance and allez les Spurs :)

Great deal for a free transfer, may be compensation up to £2.3 Million (3.5 million Euro), but with being only 17 and not playing many games would be surprised if it reaches 1 Million pounds like the other guy we got, from Cystral Palace. what I do know about this guy he is quick and can play on the left side of midfield or up front, and guess what he is left footed, we may send him on loan for a season or two, like we did with Huddlestone. maybe we could send him to southampton when we get Bale, and they can play him for the season and a half on loan.
  12. sundancer
Do not care if he is big headed or not as long as he plays well, and if Chelsea and Arse were in for him it shows our progress that we got him they did not.
  13. Stono
According to FM07 he's an AMC.

Dont normally post and I believe most people have been (relatively) positive about this. Just wanted to say, firstly, I dont know much about this guy so I cannot comment on how good or not he is...however, if it is true that both Chelsea (with Arnesen in post who, like it or not, is generally known as a good spotter of potential talent) and Arsenal (who, as much as I hate to say it, have a great history in getting young talented players) were after him, yet we got him, then its a positive move. Also, I like the fact that we are getting young players at relatively good players from all across Europe as opposed to just British-based players. Dont get me wrong: I love the thought of British players, young British players, in our team but I want young talented players period, regardless of their nationality, coming to your our team. If he adds a bit to our team, then I am all for it.
  15. davidmatzdorf

If this is true, it is code for "we need a left winger desperately and they don't". If it isn't true, the young man is beginning his Spurs career under a rather serious misapprehension.
From what I have read, he is indeed a left winger. He can also play as a striker. Which position he plays was, I think, one of his beefs with Lens, but I can't recall whether he was annoyed at playing on the wing or annoyed at playing as a striker.
  16. markspurs
I hope he lives up to his reputation of himself. Very cocky but hope its true what he is saying
  17. mawspurs
As I recall he wanted to play as a striker but Lens wanted him in midfield, which could be a bit of an issue if we want him for the left wing. Hopefully BMJ and the coaching staff can convince him to play where we actually need to fill a hole.
  18. Jeremy
Sounds like his beef must have been whether he was on the left side of the bench or the right!
Seriously, though - if we have got Commoli we have to expect European players, especially French ones. I think this can only increase the pool of talent we are researching. A key is whether they can be integrated into the squad and feel comfortable, and behave. It seems there has been pretty good discipline and cammeraderie around the place since Jol has been in place.
  19. theMAXILOPEZpsycho
Never seen him play but this guys fast becoming my favorite player. Not sure how someone can come on here and moan "if he cant get in Lens' team he wont get in ours blah blah" This guys already turned out for france u21s (stronger than England u21s) and he's only 17. Personnaly I'm only too glad this guy wants to play and he's not comming here mouthing some humble rubish about learning his trade etc etc - players that do that know they're merde and are only playing for time anyway; think Zamora, think Jenas...

Well I hope he does indeed get a few run out this term, just as I hope we can get shot of Murphy and Davids in January. Abdel I salute you and your arrogance! j'espere vraiment que tu va nous aider vainquer sur les sale salops le scum.
