As we come up to the TW finale, I thought it might be interesting to see how the overall squad has changed - so I've listed all the players over 21 in first team contention, plus the most notable iu21's

I'll try to keep this page up to date

Squad at the end of last season

GK - Hugo Lloris, Brad Friedel

FB - Kyle Walker, Danny Rose, Kyle Naughton, Ryan Fredericks, Zeki Fryers, Benoit Assou-Ekotto

CB -Younès Kaboul, Jan Vertonghen, Vlad Chiriches, Michael Dawson, (and u21 Milos Veljkovic)

CM - Paulinho, Lewis Holtby, Mousa Dembélé, Étienne Capoue, Sandro, Ryan Mason, Tom Caroll, Gylfi Sigurdson (and u21 Nabil Bentaleb)

AM Aaron Lennon, Eric Lamela, Andros Townsend, Nacer Chadli, Christian Eriksen, Cristian Ceballos, Iago Falque

FWD Roberto Soldado, Emmanuel Adebayor (and u21 Harry Kane)

I've omitted those who are not in first team contention such as Khumalo, Obika but even so that's 29 players over the age of 21 for our 25 man squad !

Ins and Outs
.................................In.................Out.............Comment

GK........................Micael Vorm...........................Pragmatic addition of like for like (with Lloris) GK

FB........................Ben Davies............................Pragmatic addition of 2nd LB experienced in PL
.............................................Ryan Fredericks....Loan to Middlesboro' for 14/15

CB........................Eric Dier...............................Youngster, but looking like a steal at 4m, covering RB as well
..............................................Michael Dawson...Doesn't fit Poch's system (unfortunately)
......................Federico Fazio...........................Seville's finest joins as CB

CM............................................Tom Carroll.........Loan to Swansea to get PL experience
......................Bejamin Stamboul.......................DM from Montpellier
................................................Lewis Holtby......Loan with option to buy

AM............................................Iago Falque.....Good but not good enough in a position we have lots of so let go (at 4m)
..............................................Gylfi Siggurdson.....Too many decent AM's so one had to go

FWD

Current Squad (at today's date)

GK - Hugo Lloris, Micael Vorm, Brad Friedel

FB - Kyle Walker (A), Danny Rose (C), Kyle Naughton (A), Zeki Fryers (A), Benoit Assou-Ekotto (and u21 Ben Davies)

CB -Younès Kaboul, Jan Vertonghen, Vlad Chiriches, Federico Fazio (and u21's Eric Dier, Milos Veljkovic)

CM - Paulinho, Benjamin Stamboul, Mousa Dembélé, Étienne Capoue, Sandro, Ryan Mason (C) (and u21 Nabil Bentaleb)

AM Aaron Lennon (C), Eric Lamela, Andros Townsend (C), Nacer Chadli, Christian Eriksen, Cristian Ceballos,

FWD Roberto Soldado, Emmanuel Adebayor (and u21 Harry Kane)

Total - 26 players over age 21 (including BAE and Fryers/Ceballos) plus 5 u21's ( Davies, Dier, Veljkovic, Bentaleb, Kane)

C = Club trained (4 of them), A = Trained at another FA Club (3 of them), Overseas(19 of them)

Davies and Dier are u21's for PL squad purposes but not EL squad purposes

I've not included the signing of DeAndre Yedlin as with his loan back to Seattle he is unlikely to impact this season (he might arrive in Jan - but looks like he needs more experience ?).

So we have 26 players but we need 8 home grown we have 9 but Dawson's off, so unless we have a clear out of non home grown players we are not signing anyone.

Think it's safe to say BAE won't be counted, in the squad can't see him being counted as our squad is bloated.

due to home grown quotas it will be unlikely that mason, Townsend, rose, walker, Lennon, will be sold and if we loan Fredric's or fryers then we still can't sign anyone, and we still have way to many players esp in midfield. I can't see how the itk can be correct about Lennon or Townsend when if we sold both we can only bring in more home grown players.

I might miss understand the home grown quota but i understand it as you can only have 17 non home grown players, I can see sandro going, Dawson and BAE but then I think we only have one space we can loan out Fredric's cabalos, fryers but it's not giving us much room to play with. Cabellos will give us one more space.

As mentioned in the OP, both Davies and Vorm are pragmatic and beneficial acquisitions.
Then if you think about it, selling Falque and purchasing Dier for roughly the same amount of £4 mil is a brilliant piece of business! The kid looks like a cultured centre back already, and he's only 20.
All in all (depending on who else leaves in the next few days) we still have a pretty deep and talented squad, and Poch's got some interesting challenges ahead of him.
Ultimately though I think we may surprise some people this season.
Especially if our fan base displays a little patience and positive reinforcement.

Agreed Dawson looks to be off, so we are down to the limit to have a 25 man squad, but don't forget we can have a 23 man squad with 6 homegrown for example - but you are correct its not likely that too many home grown players will be sold, and of course MS (if he comes) will count as home grown.

But overall it looks llike for every overseas player brought in we probably need to sell one (the first being BAE obviously)

Its one aspect that too many SC'ers overlook - the overall effect of a particular player sell/addition on the squad, and one of the reasons to have this thread.

IMO we have spent pretty much zero net spend but rectified a couple of glaring weaknesses (gk. lb) and got a vey good looking defender by getting rid of 2 am's (a position where we had too many in)

That's very clever transfer dealing, whatever the rest of the window holds

personally...

the MOST important thing of this Transfer window is....... Holding on to our top players.

The past two summer windows we have lost key players in Bale and Modric, which put us on the back foot. If we manage to hang on to Verts, Lloris and Eriksen... Its one of the best transfer windows we had in a very long time. It's the first time we actually have strengthen our squad, and not having to replace players that were sold.

Agreed spurs idol after watching united today and reading the van Gs comments in the sun united have 6 number 9s 5 number 10s our squad looks very balenced alough a center back would be good ideally we would all be over the moon if we had signed MS, Mm, and remy/ Jr I think we would look very balenced. We still have players who need to moved on Fredric's naughton and walker we only need 2 midfield I think Dembele and Paulinho we only need one of. I think Poch said he only wanted 25 players we still have a lot more when Kane, Bentalab, Milo's ect are included.

The other thing worth noting is that Poch seems to be starting to rotate his squad nicely. Partly it will be to accomodate WC returnees as well as the EL game, but between the 2 PL matches the net change was to change Naughton (suspended) and Lennon for Vertonghen and Chadli, which also allow him to look at all the options in te squad (except the likes of Fredericks, Fryers and Ceballos who I suspect will all be loaned out for experience as the squad is already full.

v West Ham : Lloris, Naughto, Dier, Kaboul (c), Rose, Bentaleb, Capoue, Lennon (Townsend), Eriksen, Lamela (Holtby) Adebayor (Kane) subs : Friedel, Davies, Dawson, Soldado

v Limassol : Lloris (c); Naughton, Dier, Vertonghen, Davies; Bentaleb, Paulinho (Chadli); Townsend (Lamela), Holtby (Dembele), Kane; Soldado. Subs: Friedel, Dawson, Rose, Sandro

v QPR : Lloris; Dier, Kaboul, Vertonghen, Rose; Bentaleb (Dembele), Capoue; Chadli (Kane), Eriksen, Lamela; Adebayor (Soldado) Subs: Friedel, Davies, Holtby, Lennon

It reminds me of 2009-10. Stable squad, reasonable expectations, sensible and timely buying. When you consider the way the Modric affair dragged through most of two summers, and we pointlessly spun out the Bale deal disrupting the start of last season, the Berbatov and Keane debacle in the summer of 08, and even the failure to sign a striker in the summer of 10, it's been our best summer window since before we qualified for the CL.

Surely Dawson doesn't count as club trained, wasn't he 21 when we signed him?

I think it is also true that u21 players who are club trained don't need to be registered but that doesn't mean they can't be. So if we wanted to register Kane and Davies to get more non club trained players into the 25 we could do.

Doesn't really help, we can play them as u21's anyway.

The way the rules actually work is that we could have 17 oveseas players and no homegrown players - with a squad size of 17 players aged ver 21 (but also have 10 or any number of u21's if we wanted

Think at the very least we'll see Ceballos off on loan or perm, one of Fryers/Fredericks out on loan, Dawson to Hull, and BAE either off or simply not named in the squad. That would leave us with 16 non-hg and 7 hg, so room for one of each without more outs.

Ah I see what you mean, I think!

I really don't understand what we would register Brad to be honest, kinda feels a waste of a non HG slot with Vorm there. I's a shame we loaned out Archer, he would surely be good enough for emergency 3rd spot.

Agreed on the 'outs' ...but do we want/need a full 25 man squad ? Most of the top 6 cluns do not - maybe 22/23 players as the 23/24/25th players in the squad do not play that much (< 10 PL games a season). But with the 22/23 man squad a number of u21's can then be slotted in.

So no disgruntled 23/24/25th players who want more playing time, just u21's delighted to be able to play, giving them good experience. Some of the u21's will then mnake it into the squad, some will not. But for every one who does make it we do not need to waste 10m buying a squad player but can focus our cash on buying better players.

And sometimes we will sell a home grown player who doesn't quite fot - Caulker for 10m wasn't a bad result for Spurs was it ?

Vorm wasn't fit enough so Freidel nominated in El squad. I think Archer nedeed more first team experience but would have preferred him at a higher level club with higher level experience

Agreed, but for now I think we will err on the side of too large a squad as Poch can get more time to evaluate all the options.

Don't think we need to count Ceballos? Unless he is injured, which if so has slipped my mind, he is featuring so little that surely a loan deal is around the corner for him.

I think the squad also needs to reflect those likely to come in.
If MM, MS, and JR are still likely to come in within the next 2 or 3 transfer windows then outs need to reflect these. Dawson, Vlad, Naughton, Paulinho, Sandro, and Townsend are all likely candidates to go alongside BAE.
I know we are only 2 games into the season but us sitting at the top of the league may 'inspire' these targets to agitate for a move even more so than before and being in a position financially, both money in the bank and reduced wages, to move for them is critical.
Our 3, arguably, weakest starters would be Kaboul, Bentaleb, and Chadli so those coming in would be as starters and give us frightening strength in depth when those 3 moved to the bench.

This is a huge window for us and Vorm, Dier, and Davies for Siggy and Falque has removed the lack of depth at LB, CB, RB, and in goal.
But Poch seems to have 3 clear targets in MM, MS, and JR to provide the icing on the cake and I think if we prioritise these, assuming they help gel Pochs system, then we are back in the race for 4th place with a high quality starting 11 and some high quality replacements.
