Tottenham are set to be at the hub of frantic activity before the transfer window closes at the end of the month.
And if Martin Jol secures his primary targets, West Ham's Anton Ferdinand, Watford's Ashley Young, Darren Bent of Charlton and West Brom's Curtis Davis could all be at White Hart Lane with Mido, Calum Davenport, Paul Stalteri and Edgar Davids all leaving.
Jol has been searching for a new centre-back for months. He wants Ferdinand but his initial approach for the England under-21 man has been rejected by new Hammers boss Alan Curbishley.
Spurs have been told they need to wait until the summer before they can buy him for £8 million.
But they have not given up hope of getting their man in the next fortnight and are in a position to offer Canada star Paul Stalteri or Davenport - who had a loan spell at Upton Park - in exchange.
Watford meanwhile are desperate to bolster their defence and Davenport would be a welcome arrival for Aidy Boothroyd.
Spurs would want to prise Under-21 striker Young away from Vicarage road and would supplement the move with a £5m cash injection, plus Wayne Routledge, currently on loan at Fulham.
Routledge, however, insists he doesn't want to be used as a makeweight in the deal.
He would rather stay at Fulham who are desperate to sign him.
Manager Chris Coleman said:"Wayne has done really well with us and he's settled in. He doesn't want to go to the clubs Tottenham are talking about, he wants to stay here with us and we want to to keep him here. So we;re hopeful we can do a deal."
Davies is also on the Jol wish-list but Albion are determined to hang on to the defender as they bid to return to the Premiership.
Davies is attracted by the chance to play at Spurs, but Albion must pay Luton a substantial sell-on fee - thought to be around 15 per cent.
West Brom could ask for Stalteri or Davenport in part exchange - but Davenport is said to be reluctant to leave the Premiership.
Charlton manager Alan Pardew is reluctant to lose Bent as he battles to avoid the drop. But might be tempted by the offer of two proven defenders as well as cash.
