    SPURS NEWS

Spurs sporting director Damien Comolli has refused to rule out a significant spending spree for the north London club when the transfer window opens again in January.

    Source: all3points

Comollio told Sky Sports that the club still has a number of priorities in certain positions and if the right players become available during January the club will not be holding back in bringing them in:

"Players want to come here because we are competitive and we can be in the top five,

That is why we managed to attract good players in the summer.

"If we see an opportunity to improve the squad in January then we will do it. But if there is no opportunity then we won't be buying."

    sounds promising!

Comolli was quoted as saying recently that Spurs have spent 85million in the last 3 years. I'd just like to give the board credit to the transfer recruitment as of late, considering that Lennon and Huddlestone cost 1m + 2.5m respectively. When you consider the following in player sales 85m is not as bad as it sounds.

    Carrick 18.5m, Atouba 1.5m, Reid 3m, Rasiak 2m, Davis/Mendes/Pamarot 7m, Brown 2.5m, Davies 3.5m, Kanoute 4.4m, Kelly 0.75m, Marney 0.5m, Postiga 3m+ Mendes, Edman 1.5m.

    Total received 48.15m - We've only actually spent 36.85m.
Not much when you further income (e.g. TV rights, Sponsorship) and Arnesen Compensation.

Credit to Levy and the board for ensuring our secure financial state.

Don't hold back Damien, propel us forward!

I think the net spending has been really quite low, particularly if you include the silly money we got for Carrick. If we include the 'share' issue that was meant to be a war chest for Santini, we've got a lot of what they call flexibility. This doesn't mean we'll spend big, of course, unless, as the man says, something big comes along. Remember we have a new training ground/academy to fund, as well as a stadium expansion/move to think about, so we won't be careless.

    Bloody journalists again. How does...

    ...get turned into...

...anywhere except inside the twisted mind of a headline writer?

It was our failure to have "suitable cover" last season that cost us a CL place. Lets not make the same mistake again.
Curtis Davies and a LW (not downing tho) should give us the complete squad.

I did a back of a napkin calculation of transfer money in and transfer money out over recent years:
15 million pounds (approx) net spent (after money in subtracted) by ENIC pre Defoe/Brown Jan purchases.

Defoe/Brown - to date - net spent 22.5 million pounds...includes money we got for Frank from Chelsea and Carrick money.
DOES NOT include 15 million pounds "special share" float.

Pretty good going if you look at the squad.

David , others - does this sound about right to you?

i want davies at the lane. whatever it takes. can we offer 2 million AND gardner in a deal? not only do we get davies, they get a very good replacement and some cash to spend. also, it would mean that gardner wont play against us.

i'm probably living in a dream world.....

I am really pleased to have Levy and Comolli in charge of this Club. I think they both are doing great jobs.

I am so optimistic about the future at Spurs, because I believe in their work.

For the first time in history, I actually don´t want us to spend big money in january. We need one good central defender (Davies?) and - maybe - a left winger, if we can find someone good enough. There are not many out there. Downing just isn´t good enough and Duff went to the wrong place.

Otherwise, I think what our squad needs now is stability. We have enough good players to challenge for top four.

    Helder and Freddie

Actually I think both Postiga and Kanoutè was 5 mil. each...which just makes the account more proffitable!

I feel we need stability now, we have a great spine,Robbo, King,Hudd,Berby and have good players around them in Dawson, Chimbonda,Malbranque,Jenas,Zakora,Defoe and Keane. There are 3 areas Jol and Comolli need to address:
    1. Left back- Are either Lee or Ekotto up to the standard we want? I would like to give them both another chance till the end of the season. I have more hope in Lee.

    2. Left Wing- Is there a young Left footer with a resonable price tag in the market? I again would rather give Malbranque a chance till the end of the season.

3.Center Back- Simple, King needs an Op, Curts Davis for a resonable price (4 mill) or have faith in Davenport.

And please sort out the Routledge puzzle! Either give him a go or let him go.

I have got faith in Davenport but as back up to Dawson, I think they're both similar types of player but when we have both in the side we lack a bit of pace and athleticism at the back. That's why I think Curtis Davis would be ideal as back up to King.

Ithink now that left back is our weekest point.Ihave no faith in lee or ekkoto if theres money to spend we must buy someone for this position.

January is never an easy time to buy and the chance of picking up a cheeky bargain looks particularly slim this year. The supply demand equation is against us. There are too many teams who still need desperately to strengthen because they didn't have time in the Summer (Villa); or their season is going badly and they need to shore it up (Newcastle); or they have a new Manager who wants to bring in talent (West Ham). That's aside from the usual emergency purchases by relegation candidates and Harry's dealings at Pompey! Factor in the new takeover money (Villa again; Pompey again; possibly Liverpool and Newcastle) and I think there will be too much money chasing too little talent.

In short - I'd like to be pleasantly surprised; but I'll settle for keeping the squad

Ekotto is actually a really decent European player and quite happy to see him play European games. He just lacks bite for the Premiership. Lee is also decent enough for playing the lesser clubs but when it comes to really awesome opponents he doesn't cut the grade. Much the same as players like Gardner, Brown and Ghaly. The problem is that who is there that is that much better who we could actually get? And even if the club would sell and he wanted to come then we would probably get scanked off a little. Anyone name an amazing young left back who we could tempt around Europe?

Otherwise its still the left winger problem, Malbranque was good business and is quality but again isn't actually left footed. Routledge and Ziegler are out in the cold, so we result to Lennon which means Ghaly ends up playing.

I don't know who is available and who would be good, but I do know these days we don't rush into rash signings that will turn out to be bad business. We'd rather wait than pay over the odds for a player and this is why we've done such good business in recent years.

Davis is the only person mentioned who I would definately say yes to. Happy to see Gardner go the other way.
