Sorry to change tack in the discussion but going back to the topic of how many players the academy actually produces, I was wondering on a related note how much people think it costs to run the academy on a yearly basis, including wages of the staff, etc?

i recently read that ipswich's academy costs around 3m a year so it's probably more than most think. as you said though, one kane and it pays for itself 10 times over or even a caulker/livermore accounts for a year or two.

It strikes me that a well run academy such as ours is just a no brainer when you consider the financial aspect it can contribute to a club. Even if you only produce one Harry Kane, Ledley King, Sol C******* a footballing generation (10-15 years), the number of players of PL quality which are produced and sold (Caulker, Livermore, Townsend etc) surely far outweighs the cost of the academy itself.

Does it go some way to explaining why THFC is actually £40m+ on the balance sheets over the last five years? When prices for English players are so ridiculously high, why wouldn't you want a conveyor belt of talent coming through?

Not to mention the fact that you have a whole system set up to preparing young players for first team allowing us to bring in young players from elsewhere (the two Kyle's, Rose, etc) and give them a sense of the club and the requirements expected of them.

Personally I think we're probably the best run club in the country and loving all the hard work which seems to be coming to fruition.

I think I recall that the minimum that an Academy needs to budget to run a Category 1 Academy is £3.5m pa - when you see the list of staff required to run one you'll understand how easy it is to get to that kind of number. So I'd guess say £5m for the academy (ie up to age 18) as we have more staff than the minimum. etc.

The u21's is another cost, and will depend upon how many are in u21's but assuming an i21 squad of say 15 - 20 players and a coaching team (backed up by physio etc), I could see another £2m - £2.5m.

Aside from the opportunity to get some of the youngsters into the first team - and Kane's value probably 'justifies' the youth set up for the next decade by himself - there will be a constant stream of sales of players who haven't made it some of whom will be sold to lower league clubs for smaller fees, but as we've seen with the sales of Caulker, Livermore and Townsend substantial fees (close on £30m for the 3 of them) are not insignificant - I think Townsend's sale just about gets into the top 10 by value of the highest sales by Spurs.

So overall I'd guess that the Academy has not cost a penny over the last 5 years - whilst delivering Kane, Mason, Bentaleb to the first team.

I think there is also a social angle which is that the club needs to show its offering a football education opportunity. Plus also PL clubs need to show they produce footballers who can make play for lower league clubs.

His agent seems to think hes still with us

several stories around that it was his agent (but we aren't quite sure who it was) was very keen to re-direct a large fee to himself, which was a reason Spurs walked away from signing a contract. If true, every reason for agent wanting to continue with the illusion that Spurs had signed the player rather than admit his part

the thing is, to date there seems to have been half a dozen people posing as his agent so no one knows who or what to believe.
There actually hasn't, it is always been Babawo Mohammed that has claimed to be his agent and that is always the person that has been quoted when we see quotes from his agent.

Whether he actually is his agent or not is another story, however this latest quote "to the best of my knowledge he is still a player of Tottenham Hotspur" sounds odd, as I would have thought an agent would know exactly who his client was contracted to.

Also, the fact that the Portuguese club announced he has signed a 5 year deal, pretty much confirms he is no longer (if he ever was) on our books.

Can't see what more Pritchard could have done, played very well in the u19 and u21s, went to Swindon, done well, went to Brentford in the championship and done very well. England u21 player not so long ago, didn't get a chance at WBA. We set him up to fail sending him to Pulis. I'll be disappointed if we sell him.

I still don't think we will. Why not give him a chance in preseason to see if he can impress the manager. He missed last year's after all.

As it is likely make or break for Pritchard, I would rather see him in the center and we usually play a different team each half.

One half

Ball Mason
Edwards Eriksen Njie
Harrison
Other half

Bentaleb Winks
Ward Pritchard Chadli
Sterling/New signing

New #CPFC scholars are: Kyle Lynch, Malachi Peynado-Peart, Jordan Norman-Williams, Jack O’Connor, Will Ozono, Liam Coates, Andrew Demby

New #CPFC scholars contd: Matthew Funnell, Tyrick Mitchell, Ibrahim Kargbo and Oliver Webber

Malachi Peynado-Peart (CB/LB) was playing for our u16's last season, but wasn't offered a scholarship as I understand it, so has joined Crystal Palace

It would be interesting to know if there were any other PL options. I can understand the logic if there weren't. Most of our players who come through the ranks get a loan spell at a bottom half PL team, e.g. Rose at Sunderland and Kane at Norwich. They were probably thinking he needs a stint at that level. Just a shame it was WBA.

On that basis, I think it's unlikely we'll let him go unless we get a silly offer for him. Which after last season is unlikely. Same for Yedlin. They will probably both get a chance to 'break' into the main squad like little Tom this year. Likewise I'm expecting McGee, Onomah and Winks to be loaned to bottom half PL sides at some stage next season.

i think it's very unlikely any of them get pl loans. onomah and winks we'd be looking at the championship or celtic/rangers, mcgee probably league 2. also can't see yedlin staying but hopefully pritchard does.

I think onomah would have a more of a chance of a pl loan, cos we've already blooded him. Many posters on here don't want the kids to play until they've been loaned. I look at it a different way, I think we should give them a few games then look to loan them out.

Surely it stands to reason that if we're prepared to give them game time other clubs might too, rather than just take someone that's played no competitive football at all. Why should we expect other pl clubs to take a chance on them if we aren't prepared too.

Extreme example but how many pl clubs would have took rashford on loan 3-4 months ago? How many would now?
