    SPURS 2 - 1 ASTON VILLA
    Defoe (2)......Barry

    Spurs:
Robinson, Chimbonda, YP Lee, Dawson, King, Malbranque, Zokora, Huddlestone, Ghaly, Defoe, Berbatov.
Subs: Cerny, Davenport, Assou-Ekotto, Murphy, Ziegler.

    Villa:
Kiraly, Mellberg, Barry, McCann, Baros, Petrov, Davis, Agbonlahor, Hughes, Cahill, Gardner.
Subs: Olejnik, Angel, Bouma, Ridgewell, Osbourne.

Jermain Defoe made it 11 goals in ten starts with his double strike that secured a 2-1 Boxing Day victory over Aston Villa .
The little hitman pounced twice in the second half and on both occasions his partner in attack can claim an assist as three Christmas points were banked at the Lane.

The team was the one that was supposed to start up at Newcastle on Saturday - only Defoe, thankfully, made it this time after picking up an injury in the warm-up at St James Park.

Defoe was looking menacing right from the opening seconds of the game, although it was a
momentary lapse by Michael Dawson that let Gabriel Agbonlahor through on goal - an opening
sealed and foiled by Ledley King.

There followed a succession of half-chances or moves that would have been hugely promising if
the final ball had a little more purpose. Tom Huddlestone, however, seriously stretched Gabor
Kiraly on 17 minutes when his piledriver required the fingertips of the Hungarian goalkeeper to
tip the ball over the bar.

Paul Robinson fielded well from a long-range Craig Gardner effort, before a Dimitar Berbatov
surge into the area was thwarted by Kiraly, leaving Mellberg injured and Aaron Hughes departing
the pitch on a stretcher. Five minutes later Defoe stole away from his marker and unleashed a
goalbound shot that was diverted off course by the backside of the recovered Mellberg.

Defoe then shot across the face of goal after good work and link play from strike partner
Berbatov. It was a pretty absorbing first half featuring lots of home pressure, but strangely
little in terms of really clear cut chances or efforts that make goalkeepers work. On the
stroke of half-time Berbatov worked the leg of Kiraly, one which unfortunately sent his shot
the wrong side of the post.

The second period began in much the same fashion as the first ended, the tempo was quick,
although Villa were contributing a bit more to the contest - having made two changes and used
up their subs at the interval.

A Huddlestone chip forward brilliantly picked out the run of Defoe on 54 minutes and it was
only a stray touch from the striker that offered Kiraly the chance to come out and snatch the
    ball.

The breakthrough came on 57 minutes when Berbatov threaded the ball into the path of his
forward thinking strike partner who had dashed into the area and shot across Kiraly and into
    the bottom right hand corner.

Danny Murphy was introduced with just over 20 minutes remaining in place of Hossam Ghaly

Our lethal weapons in attack combined again with 76 minutes on the clock and made the most of a
Robinson clearance to the delight of the vast majority of the 35,293 in attendance.

Berbatov connected with the punt downfield and steered the ball in the direction of Defoe, who
took it on before thumping past a despairing Kiraly. The delight was tempered five minutes
later when Gareth Barry resisted challenges inside our area to slot past Robinson to reduce the
deficit - just when we were thinking we could relax and enjoy the last ten minutes!

Defoe then should have bagged his hat-trick at the other end but, after jinking free of his markers, shot into the legs of Kiraly. He was given a rest with two minutes left on the clock as we sought to seal the game, a requirement that was duly achieved.

Greetings Fellow Spurs Fans across the Globe ! I really hope we do give the Villans a beating ! Robbo don'yt be a liability all the time. Berbs and Defoe to start firing !!! CoYS
  2. davidmatzdorf
So it looks as if we're starting with the line-up we wanted to start with against Newcastle. This has to be the best available starting 11, given the injury situation.

Nice to see Ziegler in the squad again. But no Mido, indeed, no substitute striker at all, despite Defoe's late fitness test...

I'm very doubtful that we will win today. Not only are Villa expert at getting away results, but we've won 11 in a row at home and the law of averages dictates that, eventually, we'll simply run out of luck.

    Hope I'm wrong.
  3. alfiespurs
I hope we can control Barry & Agbonlahor, these two will be dangerous !
  4. TheChosenOne
One win, one loss and seven draws away from home by Villa so far.
Lets double their loss column please Spurs
  5. ridouche
Yes, you're wrong. There is no such "law of averages"! you can tell that to Mark Lawrenson as well. If you take each game as an experiment and describe it as a probability then we might use the "law of large numbers", however we have only a very limited number of games witch theoretically does not hold in this case. however, Jol's selection is a worry.
  6. mawspurs
Great news that Defoe is fit. We need a win after the Newcastle debacle.

    COYS
  7. elDiablo
great to see defoe back in the line up, but i am little concerned about the absence of lennon and mido. I suspect ziegler is on the bench in case we need to shift malbranque in a supporting role. This game could be decided by how well ledders handles agbonlohor(speeling?).....this guy is quick. Lets take a chances today guys and play your heart out robbo (as usually u do!!)

    COYS!
  8. pistolP
Did Mido throw away the Pram ? I hope we win and my biggest worry is our mid field as we like been presurise and neither do we put presure on the opposition.
  9. elDiablo
Ledders just made a world class tackle on agbonlohor!!! The games has started at a good pace and it looks like jol has given our boys a firm kick to the behind. Defoe looks very sharp also!!!
  10. KingSpur
Ghaly has to be our weak link - he must play well off the ball and not be noticed by us on TV - cant see why Jol persists.

Should be interesting when JJ is back fit to see who gets left out ?
  11. sebo_sek
Hope Robbo does better than o Staurday. In my op he was respesible for all our lost goals against the Barcodes
  12. chrissivad
if they are going for the right wing...then both.

Lennon will have it with ease.
  13. sebo_sek
Looks like were picking up pace
  14. sebo_sek
    Ghaly sounds wasteful
  15. sebo_sek
Where is Zokora? Has he even touched the ball yet?
  16. KingSpur
Hudd having a great game - in a way he is 'too good' as the others at times dont see his vision and the ball is wasted.

    Defoe looking sharp.
  17. somersetyiddo
bollocks rennie is the ref i hate him he makes poll look good
  18. longdistancespursfan

Yes he has made a few crucial interceptions. have u always been a critic or just seen a bandwagon to jump on?

thud is playing excellent, ghaly is probably our weakest midiefld player so far, Im concerned that we dont have anyone who seems to have the pace to take them on like lennon does.
