It'd be fine to criticise WInks if he was actually picking safe options when there actual progressive options ahead of him. However that wasn't the case, the way Brighton set up combined with us playing a 4-3-3 really congested things for us. I was actually impressed at Winks' composure to just keep things ticking over and doing what we needed to keep recycling the ball and keep us going.
When I say poor, I mean for his standards, when normally the ball's played into him he's already had a look around and plays instinctively...but last night on quite a few occasions he was played the ball when in space, and when he'd normally turn and carry the ball he played the safe option back to a CB more often than not.

It was an uncharacteristic display by him, and as i said, the first time I can remember him actually having what I'd call a poor game.
He's a victim of his own success I think, he's now being judged against his own, very high standards.

He always plays those passes. I get people were frustrated at the speed of the game last night, but to criticise Winks is grossly unfair in my opinion.

Not when he's in space he normally doesn't.
He had a poor game, he's young, it will happen.

Comes with the territory though, doesn't it. More often than not he was the one taking the ball of Verts and Dier. He was the launch pad; the one setting the tempo.

Stop being grossly unfair.

And what was ahead of him? You had Sissoko dropping deep into weird positions, Eriksen playing deeper offering little. And 10 men from Brighton making it very difficult to play through.

As i have mentioned before it's not lucky to score goals, we put constant pressure on Brighton's goal so something had to give, nothing to do with luck.

A miss hit cross and a deflection that put the ball into the top corner are surely the very definition of luck. The easier chances we had, we fluffed. We got lucky. Very lucky.

I agree we deserved the win by putting pressure on them but how is a deflected cross going in not luck?

All true. Which makes the need the fast, one touch passing all the more important. Whether he's the right man for that role remains to be seen. But last night there's no escaping the fact that he was poor.

The one thing that stood out to me last night more than anything is that we need to work on our set pieces desperately.

Brighton have conceded from
corners more than any other team in the league and we had 10+ corners last night and failed to really even fashion a chance from any of them.

Yeah we do seem pretty poor from them, and I know Harry hit the post from a free kick but we seem crap at those as well nowadays.

Completely agree, I am not even sure who our best free kick taker is anymore.

Last season I would have said Eriksen without a doubt but he seems to have gone off the boil on free kicks completely.

Just infuriates me that we have such a tall team and players like Sanchez that can head the ball and we never seem to take advantage.

At times, we aren't unlucky to lose just because a shot hit the post. Equally, we weren't lucky yesterday just because we scored a couple of flukes. The result was not down to luck, just because a couple of hits were a bit lucky. Largely and broadly speaking, you get what you deserve over 90 minutes (with the odd exception). It's not the rule that every single result comes down to luck or lack thereof.

Conflicting headlines of our game against Brighton on BBC and Sky Sports ...

BBC “Spurs pick up deserved victory over Brighton”
Sky “Two fortunate goals send Spurs fourth” hmmm

One thing I've noticed is that once our players get into the box they very rarely pass it off, even if a guy is free at the top of the 6 yard box or far post. How many times do you see a spurs player open and one of their teammates has tried an almost impossible shot from an angle or with two defenders on him? If you watch city they just pass it off to ensure that they score, there's no stat padding or anything, I think that's the main difference. If we passed it off today when an option was available (e.g. kane not passing to a free lamela despite him (HK) having two defenders on him/in his way) we could have had 3 or 4 tap ins imo.

We did score from a free kick taken by Eriksen last night though.

By the way, why is this thread called FFS Dele!
