    SPURS 4 - 0 Cardiff
    Lennon, Keano, Malbranque, Defoe

    Spurs:
Robinson, Chimbonda, Dawson, Gardner, Assou-Ekotto, Malbranque (Ghaly), Huddlestone, Zokora (Tainio), Lennon, Berbatov (Defoe), Keane.
    Subs: Cerny, YP Lee.

Cardiff: Alexander, Gilbert, McNaughton, Purse, Loovens, Chopra, Thompson, McPhail, Flood, Ledley, Scimeca.
Subs: Ford, Johnson, Cooper, Campbell, Ferretti.

Cardiff were defeated by a 4-0 scoreline in the third round replay at the Lane.

First half goals from Aaron Lennon, Robbie Keane and Steed Malbranque effectively settled the contest before half-time and the team eased through the second period with any major scares, with the evening being topped off with a Jermain Defoe strike.

Southend at the Lane will now take place on Saturday January 27 with a 3pm kick-off.

Martin shuffled his pack a little and made four changes from the side that began the game against Newcastle on Sunday. Benoit Assou-Ekotto returned after recovering from his groin problem, Anthony Gardner resumed in central defence in place of Calum Davenport, Didier Zokora stepped in for Teemu Taino, while Keane was handed a start with Defoe reverting to the bench.

The opening ten minutes were largely uneventful until Malbranque produced the first invention of the night and threaded through to Berbatov who, as he tends to do more often than not, took the ball into his stride with considerable ease. The striker, being closed down all the time, reached the edge of the area before stabbing in a low shot that beat Neil Alexander in the Cardiff goal, but also his right hand upright.

Zokora tried his luck from distance and Michael Dawson was a yard wide with his header from a Tom Huddlestone free-kick, but the attacking play was lacking a bit of sparkle until a low cross from the left by Ekotto was steered towards goal by Malbranque and a combination of Alexander and Glenn Loovens did well to clear with the predatory Keane lurking.

We did not have to wait too much longer for the first goal of the tie and it came on 26 minutes when Aaron Lennon launched a speedy break, swapped passes with Zokora that appeared to leave the visiting defences standing, and proceeded to advance on Alexander and slot beyond the keeper from close range.

Three minutes later Malbranque sent Berbatov galloping elegantly down the right side of the penalty area and he shook off his marker to square and presented a clear crack on goal for Keane, who was not about to spurn the invitation and duly thumped home to double the advantage.

A Malbranqe volley via a deflection then had Alexander scrambling across goal again before he delivered a third four minutes before the break.

He accepted a pass from Assou-Ekotto on the left hand corner of the penalty area and switched the ball from left to right foot in an instant before unleashing a low-ish drive that beat Alexander inside his right post.

Confidence and playing panache was increased with each goal and the fashion of play continued into the second half when there was another opening for Pascal Chimbonda from a Huddlestone free-kick.

Cardiff did press forward a bit more in search of a consolation and Martin beefed up the midfield by replacing the excellent Malbranque with the more robust Hossam Ghaly - the Frenchman receiving appreciative applause from nearly all of the 27,641 inside the Lane. Defoe was then introduced in place of Berbatov. Zokora was later replaced by Tainio as the second half was passing with little incident of note.

Until Defoe intervened with ten minutes remaining. Ghaly took a pot shot from 20-25 yards out and Alexander failed to deal with his low effort and spilt the ball in front of Defoe who, at the second attempt, was able to direct the ball into an empty net.

Alexander did make ammends a minute or so later with a fine save to prevent Keane adding to his tally for the night, but the keeper - nor his team - will take many happy memories away from their evening in N17.

interesting line up. All makes sense to be fair.
  2. Rooga
Davenport not even on bench. Does this mean he is in talks with another club?
  3. alfiespurs
Greeting to my fellow spurs Fans across the globe !!! Like the line up ! Welcome back Ekotto, Gardner, I do hope you play well ( Davenport is making his way to Derby ...), Robbie welcome back .... Come on Lads !! We love you spurs !!!

good side, would have started defoe. the rest is ok.
maybe davenport is on the move?
  5. Marty
Umm...who's in goal? Robbo, I presume?

    Rest of it was predictable.

Was speaking with a Wet Spam fan who said Davenport was doing a medical there as we speak...just rumours, but seeing he's not on the bench I think it might be true...

    NEWS FLASH!!!

you may be wandering why callum Davenport isn't in the starting line up. I can tell you that my best mate works with his uncle and I work with his sisters bloke and they have both informed me that he has been at Upton Park today completing a transfer! It may all sound like hear'say but i'm sure it's alot more trust worthy information then has been available thus far.

What I was gunna say before i accidentally ended my comment was that this begs the question who have we got lined up? is Anton Ferdinand included in the deal? who knows!!!!
  8. smudger
like the line up. give defoe a little rest and good to see zokora back once hes fit he will be awesome feel sorry for him because of some of the stick hes getting. good solid 3-0 should be good. anyone know any links to watch the game?

as for davenport lets hope we've got someone lined up to replace him?
  9. englandsno1
Shame id rather see Gardner leave...
  10. alfiespurs
I really would like to see Davis coming to us !
  11. Marty
Wow, my rumour was correct...must be a first!

Hope we either get Anton in return OR (preferably) have Davies lined up. We need more backup than just Gardner, and IMO although Dervitte and Mills are huge talents, I don't think they're good enough yet.
  12. DOX
I feel much more confident with Gardner at the back. He has in the past been "a bit" foul prone. But the last couple of times he has played, he has perfomed superbly.

    I predict a 2-0 win.

    Yid Army!!
  13. ollie_spurs
I disagree, i think Gardner is better. His speed allows him to recover better after the mistakes (which he is liable to make) and the fact he is left footed means he can cover the left back.
  14. justfookinhitit
anyone know of any way I can listen to the game over the internet - I'm stuck in yank-land this week.
  15. Pillbug
    Adios Davens?

Agreed. Davens seems to have more potential upside than gardner and doesn;t has the propensity to go down with injury with the same frequency.

At any rate. I can only assume this means something positve as far as the acquisition of another CB.
  16. Pillbug
  17. mawspurs
They're both good squad players, but Gardner is more injury prone, so I'd rather have kept Davenport.
  18. englandsno1
I just dont have confidence in Gardner ( reminds me of Titus Bramble to many silly mistakes )and if Davenport is on the move just hope Jol has a good CB coming in not sure who though...
  19. grittyspur1
    Davenport for the Spammers?

I'd rather see us go for Carlito Tevez !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
