Because Toby was injured.
Nope. its because we started to lose quite a lot of games trying to play 3 at the back. Last season with three at the back our record was
5 wins 2 draws 4 losses
pretty terrible. With four at the back we lost only 3.

It didn't work last season, we looked too flat and struggled to play through midfield. It's been mostly the same in this season. I dreaded it when we started with three today, and in the first half the same pattern as is common emerged, but we tinkered at half time and it worked.

It did work in the past, when we finished second, and opposition teams weren't used to playing against it, but for whatever reason it isn't working for us so well anymore. Nor is it for other clubs, which is why most teams that transitioned to a back three 2 seasons ago have quickly transitioned back out of it.

It can be a decent option but I think with SAKE being such a good front 4 a 4-2-3-1 or variations of it probably work best for us.

Jan! (his surname is too hard!)

Wonder footballer. He is an amazing crosser. Aways misses the first man - and its not like he has blistering pace to get half a yard infront. Pure timing and technique.

Why play Davies - Verts puts more balls in more dangerous places and is a better defender.
It’s actually true. His crossing was much better than what we have seen consistently from Davies and even Rose. His delivery was top notch. It was only one game though, we don’t know if he’d doing it on a consistent basis either.

It would be interesting to see him play there for a while and we could afford to with the options we have at centre back.
My original thought to your post was we need him at centre half, but there’s an argument we could be better using him at left back.

To think we have Toby, Davinson, Foyth and you could potentially add Dier and Davies to that group, that’s a very strong set of centre-backs.

I think the problem is, he’s getting on and it’s whether he’d have the legs to do it week in, week out. I’m pretty sure he said he much prefers playing as a centre half as well, or something similar.

Based on last nights performance, you can’t help but think it’d be fun swapping Davies and Vertonghen around for a few games, though. :D

Maybe it was more just a job on Sancho they had worked on, with Toby playing LCB. Those two were excellent together in quietening him and Hakimi down in the second half.

Tonight’s two live games, us or Brentford vs Aston Villa.

I wonder which one an injured Jack Grealish watched. I bet every time he switched up to towards BT sport it was like a kick in the balls, a kick in the balls by Steve Bruce.

Only found out the result after Full Time so was stunned by such a great win. Truthfully I feared we might lose but our quality and never say die attitude seems to have carried us through. The real quality of Poch is shown by results like this. Magnificent. Well done to all involved !

Could not agree more. A top quality performance against the leaders of the Bundesliga. We look a mature top quality European side. I dont think any team will think of us as an easy fixture. Obviously biased, I thought this was a well written article.

Still ecstatic over last night's result. For the first time in ages, I didn't hit snooze on the alarm this morning as I was still buzzing!

A fabulous night to be there, well done lads , we couldn’t have asked for more, and to think that Super, Super Jan doesn’t like playing in that position.....

But last night must have been fun. You'd think he'd want to give it another go against someone else.

He scored & assisted another. All the while absolutely shutting down the "next big thing".

Had about four hours sleep and feel great, that's what glory does for you.

Definitely. Was one of the most restful night's sleep I had in ages! Shame I'm working from home today so I can't see the looks on the faces of my Gooner and Chelscum supporting colleagues.

I'm not sure if it's just the Spurs in me but I'm still very cautious for the next leg. If Dortmund go 2-0 up for instance I'l start to shit myself. Hopefully we can go there and keep things relatively tight whilst posing a threat ourselves. We should only need one goal really to absolutely see us progress.

Certainly shouldn't underestimate them or get complacent. Will need to keep it tight at the back and frustrate them. Hopefully, they'll be more open than they were last night which would give us more creative opportunities.
