Negotiations between Manchester United and Tottenham over a deal for Toby Alderweireld have reached an impasse. Jose Mourinho remains confident he can sign the Spurs centre-half Toby Alderweireld but talks are deadlocked with Spurs asking for in excess of the £55m fee United thought would seal the deal.

We shouldn't be negotiating with them at all, unless they are prepared to sell us Martial.

Agreed. If they are not willing to do that because they view us asa direct rival why the fuck would we give them the best defender in the league for an amount that wouldn’t even buy you John Stones.

Well, they've gone to £55m for a 29yo quality defender (who was injured a bit last season), who else is willing to go that high? Bearing in mind he's a guaranteed £25m in 12 months time

We aren't desperate for their money, we can afford to turn them down. We look small time selling them one of our best players while they are not prepared to sell us a player that has no future with them. Fuck em I'd rather we sell him elsewhere for less money.

£30m is a lot of money to lose, like a lot

The only tricky issue is, and this is why I would tend to agree with @spurspipedreams is that holding out for more money is delaying it going into the coffers for Poch and I thought that the whole idea was for this brinkmanship to stop so that Poch can get on with signing players earlier. I may well be totally barking up the wrong tree and I completely agree that Levy won't want to be mugged but how much extra are we holding out for?

make sense. 55m is a fair offer.

knowing that he will cost 25m next season means no teams will go over 40 to bid for him.

if its just a 35m ++ bid then might as well have him for another season then lose him. rather that and be a defensive juggernaut for 1 more year than lose him now just to earn 10more million.

who knows by keeping him we suddenly get to contend for the title next year? then suddenly the narrative changes and we can pay him what he wants

if they want to buy him more than we want to sell him. so pay up or shut up.

I just hope that we aren't carrying on with the 'haggling over a few quid' approach as I thought that we were supposed to be getting away from that.

55 million is a fair price for a 29 year old. He wants to leave and if we keep him for another year his value will drop, if he is unhappy, his performances will tail off and Poch does not like disgruntled players.Lets be honest he should have signed for Southampton, we stole him as he was unhappy and we offered a better deal.
Great player no doubt, one of the best defenders that have played for Spurs, but he wants to be a mercenary having used Spurs to better his career.
Take the money or if possible try and include Martial as part of the deal......I think he wants to join Spurs and will fit in.

Money doesn't keep clean sheets.
We need something useful in return. If they're not willing to trade then block their calls Daniel.

29 is not old for a centre back, especially for someone as great as Toby (when fit). Big step backwards selling our best players to direct competition. Nothing worse than seeing that arrogant misery guts getting what he wants and weakening us the same time.

Can't see anyone paying over twice as much for a player this off season, when they can pick him up for half as much next Summer.

Another click bait load o' cobllers.

Even if we keep him and he's available for £25m next summer, if the injuries and struggling for form become the norm, he might even find few suitors who want to gamble on him. Especially if that 2 week window in the clause goes by with no bidders or successful negotiations taking place. And if the bids are acceptable at that point, who's to say any other club will offer him the kind of salary Toby is looking for? And finally, the clubs who might want him now, will possibly, even probably, have moved on to other targets and filled their vacant slot for him with somebody else by then.

I’m sorry did they think negotiating with levy was going to be easy

Absolutely. And anyway if we are selling him might as well make sure he doesn't get a pre-season training with them as well as achieving the maximum price.

I think £55m is more than fair, in fact i think id want more.

He will strengthen them and if you want to strengthen your team you have to pay for it. Lets remember how much they paid for Pogba? Age is irrelevant to the price if you want the player.

I don't want 55m I want a lot more than that. My preference is he plays for us next year, if not then abroad. Selling to Manyoo makes no sense
