Wow !

I should have known

Just like today. 1 -0 up, Brighton get a man sent off, we then get Galvin sent off and let in two goals in the last 5 minutes against the bottom club in the old First Division.

Brazil, Lacey they really were that bad.

Hoddle wasn't playing, from the highlights and the Barry Davies commentary Brighton were rooted to the bottom, but ontheior way to FAC semi final and then a Wembley appearance against Man U.

It was 2/4/83 Liverpool were top and Spurs 24 points off the pace with Brighton a further 16pts behind Spurs prior to the game. Brighton hadn't won in nearly four months and Jimmy Melia had not long been in charge.
At 1-0 Brazil smashed a easy chance onto the crossbar.

Spurs were playing an offside trap then and Davies had the temeritiy to say this sort of football isn't going to bring the fans back, yet Arsenal would be playing this way for the next fifteen years.

Nah some things never change.

:) TCO - they should have beaten UTd in the final too - but for that famous miss (by Gordon Smith I think)

- come to think of it - we must have been a bit lucky to have qualified for the UEFA Cup that season (which of course we went on to win)

have to check up the stats on that :)
actually tho no - even tho we were well behind Pool we recovered well and had we won that day - add those three points and we finish 2nd above the mighty watford - (instead we finished 4th)

http://www.krysstal.com/display_leaguetable.php?season=1983

actually the stats are fascinatiing - according to the site which I rate very highlly and can't praise enough - watford finished 2nd in their first-ever season in the top flight- which seems to be absolutely incredible to me -

and five of the top 6 hadn't been in the top flight more than eight seasons (in their present duration - obviously teams like us & UTd had been in the top flight many a season overall)

it seems like there was much more fluidity in those days (yes yes, state the obvious why dontcha DC_B :)

Well thanks for that DC-B, another site I can waste loads of time on.

Re the 82-83 season, As you said above with Aston Villa & Forest just behind us
in 5th & 6th both having won the Euopean Cup in 79 & 80 (NF) and Villa in 82.

QPR also came up and finished 2nd to Liverpool not so long before that as well.

Tis verily a funny old game.
