Just seen an article on the news that Stan has Alzhiemers, so sad. Game at Loftus Road tomorrow to pay for his future care.

Great player back in the 70s, imagine what he'd earn in todays game

Special talent. Terry Venables said Stan would have run to the bookies during half time to get another bet on if he'd been able to get away with it.

Back in the day when Stan was at QPR my old man did a lot of building work at Loftus Road. My Dad was also a big gambler and always had a few greyhounds on the go, doing the rounds at most of the London tracks and knew Bowles and the other QPR players of that time. I occasionally went there with him for the bigger meetings at White City and often saw Bowles there with his little clique of half a dozen or so hangers on.

Strangely enough my old man, now 84, also has been suffering with Alzheimer's and dementia for a few years.

Terrible state.

I remember and he was a good player with more discipline he would have been even better.

They were a great team back in the day, when he was at his peak.

Sad to hear about Stan Bowles, he was a terrific player and as others have said a real character.

Also sad how many of the players of that era are suffering with or have died from Alzheimers and other forms of dementia.

I know Jeff Astle's (ex WBA Striker) family have started a foundation to investigate dementia in sports people, after his post mortem examination showed damage consistent with repeated blows and they believed that it was due to heading the old leather balls which became extremely heavy when wet. It was like heading a cannonball as those who are old enough to remember will confirm.

Some of our own best known ex players including Danny Blanchflower and most recently Dave McKay and currently Martin Peters have suffered from dementia.

Jeff Astle's story can be found here
