He does seem a man without an island at the moment, I think we all wanted him to be the Lampard of a midfield 3 but it hasn't worked out like that so far.

There's 3 options, either the Lampard position of the 3 as you suggested, we allow him the shadow striker role which has so far proven to be the best or he takes the left side of the forward positions similar to Ronaldo for Madrid.
I don’t know where Dele’s at in this potential reshuffle. His stats have been superb since he broke into the squad but his technique, especially control and dribbling, can be woeful and exacting against a team looking to either press or catch us on the counter. Ideally, he’s best suited further up the pitch where his positional play and goal scoring ability, arguably his two best features, can flourish. But I don’t see how he works in a 433 that places a premium on pace out wide. He definitely needs to work on his ball control and quick distribution if he becomes one of the midfield three should we change formation

Thankfully at 23 with gifts both technically and athletically, not to mention a great brain and attitude, he’s got time on his side.

Yeah I wondered if Poch knew that this transition period would be difficult but he would end being world class from improving his all round play and a shift of position but I agree with you.

That’ll be his real challenge if we are moving towards the 433 model. Work on ball retention, distribution and accuracy. He’s got an absolute engine in him so he’s physically well placed to suit this style

I actually think, with his physique and street football instincts, if he can improve his awareness of play and decision making he could be a top class box to box player. It would mean being less of a goal threat, which is fine if we have Son, Kane and Lucas up front, and he’d undoubtedly still chip in with a lot more than Dembele it Sissoko. His issue is, as a 2nd striker in a 4231 he’s great, but he doesn’t have the explosiveness to be effective out wide as an inside forward/ winger like Son/ Lucas, nor does he have the nimbleness and execution of a playmaker from wide like Eriksen.

His template should be Gerrard, he’s so similar in both his physical and technical gifts, and also in his limitations, but Gerrard’s awareness and decision making are what maximised his gifts, both as a second striker behind Torres, and as an all action midfielder.

Anyway, wildly off topic and no longer talking about Bergwijn, who I think looks pretty promising but shouldn’t be a priority.

What the fuck does this have to do with Bergwijn?

Take it to Spurs Chat. Seriously.

Excited to get another look at him tomorrow. I thought he was pretty darn impressive against England. Much stronger on the ball than I thought and really good technically with both feet.

Work rate was a bit of a question, but not sure if that was system or player.

I don’t think we can safely say that.

Last season he scored 10 and assisted 5 in a palace side fighting relegation.

The year before it was 9 and 3.

The year before it was 7 and 9.

At a side who finish in the bottom parts of the league every season, that’s a very good output, probably the only reason they’ve not gone down in fact. It’s a myth that he’s all flash and no substance and, should he move to us to play with Kane, Son, Dele, Lucas, etc, he’d almost certainly be even better.

He’s not a priority, we have Lucas and Son already for that type of player so someone maybe younger and talented but with more to prove like the guy this thread is dedicated to would be more appropriate, but if we had Zaha, Son and Lucas to choose from out wide we’d be in a very strong position.

Oh shit, now I want N’Dombele, Lo Celso AND Zaha :cry:
I don’t buy this whole “if he’s good on a bad team he’ll be amazing on a good team” bit. It’s pretty much equally as possible that he’d be actually worse. We’ve seen it countless times with other players. He’s the entire focal point of that team and all their players look to pass to him all the time so when he loses the ball it’s no harm done - he won’t get that here.

We’ve literally watched Zaha on multiple occassions miss sitters against us.

Completely agree. I like him but he’s not worth it for us.

If we’re focusing on the final third, I’d prioritise a player who’s more technically accomplished with a better final ball. We have head down dribblers, and ours are better finishers than Zaha

Thank you BBLG - you've summed up what I've been thinking.

That said, I think he needs some 'explosiveness' to be a box-to-box player. I mean, just look at videos of NDombele or our very own Sissoko. They seem to have that power to burst past players and once they've beaten their man, they're driving forward into the opponent's half.

I don't see this in SB, probably because he's not big or strong enough.

Apparently Edwards posted more dribbles per game than Bergwijn. Haven’t seen any clips but could we bring him back into the fold over the Summer I wonder?

https://www.independent.co.uk/sport...sior-loan-lionel-messi-mauricio-a8957216.html

Edwards had a decent season from what I heard but not much more than that. Bergwijn was a stand out player in the league.

I hope someone who watched Edwards this season more regularly than me could get us better input on his performances.
