Stoke City have revealed they refused to cover the £1m payment that Tottenham made to Portsmouth for the transfer of goalkeeper Asmir Begovic.

Spurs paid the money up front as part of a joint deal for Begovic, who ended up joining Stoke, and Younes Kaboul.

Stoke chairman Peter Coates told BBC Radio Stoke: "We were aware of that during the negotiations.

"They [Portsmouth] wanted us to pay more to compensate for that, but we weren't prepared to do that."

Begovic joined Stoke on transfer deadline day for £3.25m, although Kaboul did complete his move to White Hart Lane during the transfer window.

The debt to Tottenham over a player who never played for the White Hart Lane club was one of the dealings revealed on Wednesday when the full list of Portsmouth's £119m debts was made public.

It had been incorrectly suggested the £1m Tottenham were owed was some kind of sell-on clause, but Spurs have insisted they came to the arrangement with Portsmouth to try to help the debt-ridden club, and the say they are justified in their debt demand.

Why would Stoke have anything to do with 1 million Pompey owe us? Spurs made the deal with Pompey not Stoke, this is just stupid, we just wanted a backup keeper got burned by Begovic, no big deal, we got Kaboul who has done a pretty good job filling in when needed, probably worth the 1 million they owe us.

If not we should just add it to the mugging we gave them over Niko, 2.5 million looks like the steal of the season so if we had to eat 1 million more for him I would still do that deal in a heartbeat.

Stoke did compensate Pompey for the £1m they owed us. They paid £3.25m for him, so why could Pompey not send £1m of that fee to Spurs?

i make em right, from what ive read portsmouth wanted an extra million so they could give it to us, stoke refused to pay, wheres the problem? portsmouth owe us the money not stoke

Pompey lack class and I'm glad they are going down the pan. We try to help them and they screwed us. They got paid twice for the same player. Stoke should have paid them 2.5mil and paid us 1mil.

When someone is sinking they will say anything.

Last time we try to help them out. Thieves.

stoke are the real theives, i thought pulis was harry's mate.. but he talked begovic out of moving to us and stole him like a snake.. i wudnt want a mate like that.

also robbed us off an important point at WHL, but thats irrelevant; playing matches doe not come down to mates.

i have no sympathy for pompey at all

i'm glad they've been banned from europe - shame they weren't banned from the FA Cup too

hope it's a long ime before we see them again in the prem - maybe they'll have a proper ground by then - i'm surprised their current one passes prem regulations

West Ham thought that Gudjohnsen was theirs; it happens. Until the player signs he hasn't signed. Thieves huh?

fair enough, then we're theives aswell. but it cant hav taken much persuasion to talk gudjohnsen to sign for us instead of west ham.. and i mean as much disrespect possible there.

begovic was gonna play second fiddle to gomes and sorenson either way... so pulis must have really tried his utmost to swing his decision in their favour; i mean who on earth would rather play as backup for mid-table team as opposed to backup for champions league chasers? pulis is a snake.

if the slammer had paid Monaco any money or fee that would be bad. To my knowledge travel money is all they would have laid out for.

We had and agreement in place and money exchanged hand.

one bizarre thing is that begovic hasn't played for them yet AFAIK - but the whole idea of him going to stoke was that he would get more games there

i think he's a good keeper and probably was too good to be our second string - but stoke's second string - blimey

Well if Pompey can't pay us what is owed, we should have one of their players as compensation. That O'Hara looks mustard ......
