Martin Jol revealed that Mido and Dimitar Berbatov battled against injury and illness respectively to take to the pitch against Liverpool on Saturday.

Mido missed our Boxing Day clash against Aston Villa with a groin injury and was still struggling approaching this weekend while Dimitar was laid low on Friday with a soaring temperature.

In the end, Mido started alongside Jermain Defoe and lasted for 58 minutes before Dimitar was called off the substitutes bench to replace him. Unfortunately, neither could find the target as we went down 1-0 to the Reds.

"Dimitar Berbatov was ill and had nearly a 40 degrees temperature," reported Martin, who is also without Robbie Keane as he recovers from medial ligament damage.

"Mido couldn't play yesterday (Friday) but I said to him he would have to play and he's a good lad, he did a final test before the game and was 80, 90 per cent fit.

"I spoke to Berbatov this morning (Saturday) and asked if he felt better and could sit on the bench, he said yes and maybe he could play for 10 minutes but in the end it was a bit more and I felt he did unbelievably well, on Friday he was in bed with a fever.

"I feel Berbatov will be fine for Portsmouth on Monday."

Well done Lads, you are a credit to the team
  2. DOX
Everything about Berbatov oozes class! The aura surrounding him is incredible. The moment he was about to come on against Liverpool, you just knew something was about to happen ...Unfortunately, not enough today.
    Haíl the Berbinator:bow: Hail...!
  3. grazinho1
Yeah its a real pity we were not at full strength , Liverpool can think themsleves very very lucky.Routledge needs to be recalled.
  4. morriss
Best signing we've made for the last few years. He's just a cut above the rest.
  5. 2bearis2do
    All very well and applaudable.

But at the end oif the day why bother having reserve players if they cant even get on the subs bench?

    Barny? Peckhart?

I'd rather see them on the bench than a fullt fit Mido.

Egypt don't produce top notch footy players....as simple as that.

Skysports news are reporting this morning that Lennon is still 2 weeks from fitness. King will miss at least the Pompey game and we still have Keane out, Mido struggling, Berby recovering from illness etc.

Why do these things pile up at the worst possible time?

    Have to agree.

Yesterday, both the Egyptians lost their heads when faced with clear scoring opportunities. I did enjoy Ghaly's style at the off, I liked how he was attacking minded and got into the box... but to off-set that, he gives the ball away, lacks quality of touch and, as i mentioned, misses glaring opportunities that messers Tainio and Jenas might not.

    Man I miss Jenas.

Anyway, I would like to see Murphy and Davids shipped out in the window with a Davids-type personality brought in, someone who the team looks to for inspiration. Zokora should be that player, but he just hasn't stepped up yet.

I too love Berbs. He came in and didn't make an instant impression but he really has started to settle and show all how good he is. His mentality is strong and he is a real professional player. I think the fact that he has won over the crowd is a sign that he is a great player and hopefully will continue to improve and impress. This has happened a great deal in recent years, players coming in and gradually proving themselves to the fans. We've now got a decent number of players who are adored by the fans and a manager who almost no-one would dream of replacing. It's pretty damn good being a yid in these times and at present losing the odd game will still happen. Ali's post 'time to grow' hits the spot, we have a young team and unfortunately aren't there quite yet. But as long as we do keep our squad together we will achieve great things with our current approach. Liverpool was a shame but we've got to get right behind the team again for the coming games.

With regards to reserves playing (Perkhart), and players like Davids and Murphy leaving, I trust Jol, Comolli and Levy to make the right decisions. What we must remember is that Davids and Murphy will also have a say in this and their attitudes will come into whether we will sell or keep them. If Davids goes, I think Zokora will step up to the challenge. He hasn't stamped his mark on the Premiership quite yet but I've got no doubts he will. People often forget how much change a signing like Zokora has to cope with. He's moved to a new country, in the capital, met a huge number of new people, playing in a new team, in a new league with a different style of football. It's a huge amount to take in and will take time to become more comfortable and develop confidence however confident you are. I think as with Huddlestone and Carrick he needs a good season before you can really start to judge him fully. I think he's definately got the attributes and mentality to be a massive success, he just needs time and support to become a well established top premiership midfielder. As for Ghaly, good squad player but I wonder if he is capable of ever cementing a first team spot. Personally I don't believe so but again I guess Jol and Hughton will come to that decision. Although we are slowing down in the transfer market these days, I don't believe that the door will be closed at anypoint. Comolli, Jol, Levy all seem to be determined that if there is someone better we can get and it is financially viable, we will bring them in. In turn this will see the lesser players eventually leave or shown the door (M.Brown, Paramot, Kelly, Davis, Rasiak etc etc). Having players like Ghaly fighting for recognition is a healthy situation for the club. Long live Jol.

Also I agree with Grazinho1, bring Routledge back!

Barnard has been injured all season - It's a real shame otherwise I'm sure he would have got a few chances to play.

Pekhart, mmm. Never seen him, but it would have been a big ask yesterday to chuck him v a top team. The Spurs crowd usually back youngsters, but had he missed a fw and we lost, might have been damaging for him. However, I can see the logic of playing him as well.

The fact is, our squad needs bolstering if we are to get top 6 and a trophy, indeed if we are to get top 6 period.
  12. alchemission
Yes, BMJ and DM will make the decisions, right or wrong I trust in that decision. So I guess the point in the forum is to a) guess our manager's and staffs' minds based on our experience of them, and their experience and surrounding circumstances, or
    b) guess the mind of an ideal management in a similar context.

The 'A's amongst us live in the real world, where players, managers, referees, etc. have their own minds, emotions, issues, etc. which posters take into consideration before speaking their minds... 'A's commonly understand the game better and realise the fine divides in behaviour and decision-making, more often than not explaining the naked truth over the fog of bravado and political correctness.

The 'B's... see the game in an ideal light, explanations consistently referred to in the conditional tense - should, could and would... it's all well and good, but what is the reality?? Referees, blind; managers, accountable; players, lazy...? Maybe, but there are always other variables more pertinent to the equation.

It's a pitty you are judging Mido as if he never played and excelled last season
  14. paulspursman
fair play to the lads. give there all at times like this

    what was ghaly's excuse then??
  15. That Guy
Agree there, Mido was quality beginning of last season, I'm sure if he can get his fitness up he'll come good.
  16. rooster1
The A's v B's, Is this a jungianspurs typology that you've drawn up about personality types .Any more info for
    the laymen. "Spursjian".
  17. alchemission
I agree that Mido on his day is dangerous...

...but a top team would not have someone of Mido's variable fitness and form in their squad. Without a prolongued run in the team, he won't ever reach the 'heights' of last season.

We really should look for a young replacement.
  18. 5PUR5
why would you want that? last season he was our second highest scorer and probably would of been first had he not missed the last leg of the season. This season he's been in and out with injury and hasnt made very many starting appearances and what was defoes recod before he got a run in the team?
  19. alchemission
Nah, I just headed off on a tangent, no doubt fuelled by an overwhelmingly spontaneous desire for philosophical fulfilment...

    ...man this shit's good.

In short, a Realist vs. Ideologist comparison... nothing personal ya know.

Anyway, what the hell is "Spursjian" and who on earth is "Jungianspurs".
