I'm interested as to why @DaSpurs agrees with this...

I like Bentaleb a lot, really do. Brilliant passing ability and has a great mentality. However, I don't think he offers enough in some areas, and so I don't think he'll go on to be recognized as one of our best ever. People rate him as a "box to box" midfielder, but he never gets into or even near the opposition box from open play, doesn't get involved in tight spaces, and doesn't play incisive balls in behind. IMO, these are aspects essential to a box to box position. Bentaleb appears to me to be similar to Schneiderlin, in behind a mobile holding mid rather than a genuine box to box midfielder or a playmaker. That's completely fine and he can still be a tremendous player for us, hell I even expect it, but I'm not sure where people have gotten this concept of him as a genuine box to box midfielder.

He has huge promise, but I think due to the fact he seems a CM/DM hybrid, I think he needs to be partnered either with an out-n-out defensive mid or a playmaker, or our attackers ahead of him need to be more dynamic than our current lot. It's all just entirely too static atm, and in my view it's because the balance is still considerably off. Really need to get it right this summer if we're to bring the best out of the players we already have. That doesn't necessarily mean spending a whole lot, I just really think we need to prioritize balance and compatibility.

He's only 19 years old! Plenty of time to work on other aspects of his game. He's got enormous potential.

i could dig that if he was 30 but how can you give such a definitive evaluation on a 20 year old with 18 months of professional football to his name? modric lacked in similar areas to those you mention, does he also not go down as one of the best centre mids the club has had either?

Yeah I'm aware he's got time well on his side, but I think he prefers to play in midfield facing the play and supporting it rather than getting involved. I think this is actually a strength of his, as he's very good at presenting himself even in tight, frenetic situations to offer an option out. I think this is simply his role moving forward, and he's just shown no inclination whatsoever of being a box to box player. There's not really anything wrong with that as he can be a fantastic player in his own right, I just don't think he'll ever even transition to being an entirely different midfielder from what he is. It's one thing if, as Modric did, he displayed some nous for getting involved in tight spaces (Modric had much tighter touch and of course a lower center of gravity to better work tight spaces in getting forward), but Bentaleb seems to prefer standing off and then shifting the field rather than giving another option in those tight spaces.

I'm not slighting the kid, I just don't think he's being accurately described by some people and so those perceptions are leading to altered expectations. I think he'll go on to be very similar to a Pirlo type, but he's not the box to box playmaker people seem to expect of him.

All of this is mirroring the Transfer Rumours Forums and as we usually do, we prefer everything in the one place so i'm locking this shortly, i'll leave it open for a little while longer so you can conclude your arguments/debates..

This is my final post in this thread.

You disgust me, DaSpurs. I actually feel physically sick. You are a troll in disguise.

Just think about your actions for a minute. You've forced me to make my last post in this thread about your ridiculous views.

Disgusting.

Goodnight.

Entirely disproportionate response. Don't think I said anything remotely close to "disgusting."

There's no need for that, at all. Behave yourself please!
