Tottenham transfer plans in motion with Mauricio Pochettino set to spend £120m

It is understood that Jamaal Lascelles and Ajax’s Matthijs de Ligt have particularly impressed the club while Wilfried Zaha, Jonny Evans and Jay Rodriguez are also being considered

Mauricio Pochettino will have a budget of at least £120m to upgrade his Tottenham Hotspur team in the summer, as he primarily seeks players in central defence and attacking positions.

That amount will likely be boosted by the possible sale of Toby Alderweireld, creating that need for another centre-half, but the Argentine’s plans are already set and in motion.

It is understood that Newcastle United’s Jamaal Lascelles and Ajax’s 18-year-old Matthijs de Ligt - a former teammate of Davinson Sanchez - have particularly impressed the club for the defensive positions.

Pochettino also wants to give more unpredictability and depth to his attack, with Crystal Palace’s Wilfried Zaha a long-time target. The relegation of West Brom could also provide opportunities for deals as Jonny Evans is set to leave for a cut-price deal, and Pochettino has previously worked with Jay Rodriguez at Southampton. The latter’s injury record may be an issue, however.

Spurs are meanwhile said to be relaxed about Mousa Dembele’s contract situation and the midfield position, and there remains the possibility that he will extend for another year although China is also an option.
Lol some of those players are awful. I mean Evans playing the highline ?

Come on scouts go find some great players

It’s a scatter gun approach, they’ve gone from one of the most highly sought after CB’s in De Ligt to a tried and tested CB in Lascelles to the experienced Evans, given the latter has a tiny reported release clause our reported outlay ranges from £3m to £50m.

Then there’s the expensive and unpredictable Zaha (£40m ish) and Rodriguez cheap as chips mentioned in the same breath.

Given the calibre of players we’ve previously been told we’re interested in, this article comes across as extremely random... and plucked from forums like this.

It states they've a source on the budget, the Lascalles and De Light interest, and that we're relaxed on Dembele's contract. I'm inclined to believe they have a source, but it could be the tea lady for all I know.

We're pretty tight on leaks, so it could well be from an agent we've been giving assurances to. In which case chineese whispers and agendas apply.

The rest is padding to fill out the article, and worded as speculation. Evans IS available. Zaha HAS been a long term target. J-Rod HAS played for Poch before. All true statements.

Annoying admittedly but that's how journalism needs to be monetised to compete these days. The more clubs and players you can mention in an article, the more hits. It's partly why every player gets linked to most of the Top 6 in every article.

Just finished watching Atalanta game and once again I’m very impressed by Musa Barrow (Striker). He came on in the second half and scored after 2 minutes with a great composed finish.
He’s 19 and has played 7 times in the league this season, last game against Inter he was also impressive and is improving game by game
In 20 youth league + cup this season his scored 26 goals and assisted 7, that’s very good

He’s like a mixed Eto’o and Drogba. He’s very fast, good finisher, he make smart runs, is strong In the air and has the physicality. I really like him and hope our scouts are watching him. If he keeps progressing I think we should buy him next summer (not this)

Atalanta seems to be a production house over the past couple years. Am I wrong? Just keep hearing that name associated with some real talent.

Don't it always seem to go that whenever one of these bloody transfer windows comes around again, we get linked to the worst players, players we wouldn't in reality give the time of day to. The agents (the game's true parasites) have a field day putting all sorts of ridiculous rumours out about all and sundry, trying to promote their clients and with a view to starting bidding wars, and the journos lap it up. 95% of it is fake news. God I hate these bloody windows. :poop:

I don't recall any player developed by Atalanta this past years. Kessie is the only one I can remember and he's nothing out of the ordinary

I can see the appeal in Rodriguez. He'd be much better in a Spurs shirt than for that crap he plays for now. He's a good lad, Poch has got the best out of him before and I think he'd be a better back-up than Llorente, in our setup anyway. We aren't going to be signing any players who want first team assurances and Rodriguez may be happy to get less game time just to be in a better team. Fergie used to make signings like this and United were just fine. They don't all have to be sparkly signings.

Evans, I draw the line at - too old and is terrible in a defensive high line. He used to mess up all the time at United.

Lascelles would be a decent signing but I can't see it. He's Newcastle's main man and Benitez will be trying to reassure him. He will want to play week-in-week-out too.

De Ligt, he's the one we really need I think.

Zaha - I've no doubt we are interested, I just think that ship has sailed.

We've been told multiple times that we have a big list of players so I wouldn't take it that these players are top of our list. We've probably just reached out.

Under fergie he was good but in a high line he got exposed

Does De Ligt's age not scare anyone else? Should Jan go down for an extended period of time our CB's would be 22 and 19.

I'd prefer Lascelles to Mawson tbh, looks to be the more complete defender to me.

If Dembele goes we need two mids in I think.

A 22-year old and 19-year old who played with each other for a season, so there's that.

And went to a European final no less.
Where on the course they gave up 3 goals to Schalke in a game, 4 goals to Lyon in a game and 2 to ManU in a game.

Once again, I'm not against the idea I just think it's a necessary discussion point.

They were 20 and 17 at that time. And the goals a team concedes are not exclusively because of how the CBs play

As good as De Ligt is, I'm not sure he's what we need. We already have a highly promising ball-playing teenage CB in Juan Foyth, and I can't help but think that if we had both, they'd get in the way of each other's progress.

What we need is someone with a little bit more experience, who we can rely on to lead the defence when Vertonghen isn't playing. I've seen Lascelles and Lenglet mentioned, and I like both - Lascelles may not be the most natural ball-player, but he's English, young for a centre-back, and already Newcastle captain. Lenglet is also young, but is a pretty ideal fit for our style of play, and has Champions League experience with Sevilla.

I completely agree and understand just trying to play devils advocate to the reasoning that they played in the Europa league final, which is also a team accomplishment. Having two guys to depend on that young with the heights we're reaching for makes me nervous.

After the Trix ITK saying 1or 2 Midfielders and a LB and Herc saying whispers of Poch has a preference for 3 at the back and Rose would struggle to pass a medical I wondered if,

Poch has decided to use Dier at CB next season (he might be more willing as he’d have 2 years to nail down an England spot in that position before euros).

With 3 at the back a more attacking left wing back may be required which would seem to fit Sessegnon well, Davies could be the left of the back 3 if Jan is out/rested.

The 2 midfielder purchases could then cover Dier and maybe a sissoko upgrade (I don’t want to contemplate losing Dembele right now!)
