I actually think we're in a fortunate position this summer. Previously the struggle has been 'our first team is so good but our squad needs improving' and we've by and large responded to that, but it's not something you see pay dividends on the pitch so much. Now, with Rose, Alderweireld and Dembele all potentially leaving, and all at their peaks are our best option in their position, we have the chance to make changes which could genuinely improve the first team.

If we could get, say, Sessegnon, De Ligt and Kovacic to replace those three we'd be overall stronger. The former two because we'd be replacing two players who don't play and don't want to be here with two of the biggest talents on the planet, and the latter would be someone who offers much of what the departing player offers but with more dynamism, pace and vision to improve our attack.
Have you watched Sess or de Ligt ? I’m no expert but I watched Ajax a few days ago against VVV and he looked pretty dodgy. Not criticising just wondering how many people on here who are desperate for us to spend £50m each on 2 18 y/os have actually watched them or are just going on the hype. If we really want to challenge for the title next season as opposed to in 2-3 seasons then I don’t see us getting there with two new 18 y/os, when was the last time a title winning team in any of the big leagues did that ? Ironically signing 18 y/o future stars would seem more in keeping with our prior modus operandi except for the fact that now the prices for this potential have become stratospheric.

Valid points in your argument. Not that I necessarily agree though with the players in question. But! You do have a point to be considered.

Can guarantee that a City/United would just go out and replace Dembele with Milinkovic-Savic - a straight, CL quality player who'll improve the side.

Unfortunately that's not really our style, but I'd say this summer could be a good time to change that ever so slightly if we want to progress.

De ligt and sessegnon wont make us title winning team... I think de ligt will struggle in premier league and he is miles behind toby in terms of development

De Ligt is young yes but imo he will become one of the best CB's in the world maybe the best, he has absolutely everything technically and mentally but more importantly even at such a tender age he is supremely confident without being arrogant and he's a Leader of Men.

He's obviously in terms of development miles behind Toby as there's nearly a 10 year difference in age which his huge in any position but even more so as a central defender.

This lad is 18 only 18 he's insanely talented for that age, he won't next year make us into a Premier winning team just yet and will need time but he could for years to come.

We either take the plunge now as we will never ever get another chance in the future as his transfer fee even in another 12 months will be astronomical.

A dream signing would be Koulibaly, best CB in Europe with Ramos IMO!

Just scored a bullet header for Napoli in a title decider vs Juventus!

Exactly. The simple fact is if we wait until there are zero question marks over a talented young player, then someone with infinitely deep pockets will just blow us out of the water.

If there is a possibility of Bale and Modric, then I’m 100% behind us going for them. It would be insane.

My preferred CM would be Kovacic, but he’s unlikely, especially if RM are open to Modric leaving. I also like De jong, I think he’s a real talent in midfield, very Carrick.

I think a main thing would be to get certain players back to last years fitness and performance levels. Wanyama was a beast last year (imagine him of last year, next to Modric/Kovacic/De Jong) Rose was fantastic (if he can’t get back there, Shaw or Sess) and Hugo more commanding.

Aurier still has uncertainty about him (maybe Perreira was the better option) and Moura will be much better for a pre-season.

Then we have the likes of Malcolm, De Ligt, and Fekir who I would like to see here, but again they may not be do-able.

I know you watch a lot more continental footy than I’m able to these days, but I just don’t see a plethora of deep lying playmakers able to slice through top class defences at will. Even Pep, with his unlimited resources, opted to convert KDB into one rather than try to find it in the market.

I don’t want a deep lying playmaker, I want more of an 8 type, or at least a 6/8 hybrid, someone who has some diligence and tenacity but also some dynamism - physical and mental - but who plays with some alacrity and tempo, some incision.

You don’t want much then...

Again, I really don’t see many players out there, that do what you want, at a high enough level.

I still maintain that it’s better decision making in the final third that would have seen us overcome Juve and United.

you'll probably be watching for thauvin anyway but check out amadou haidara for salzburg when they play each other next week, he'll most likely be playing right midfield so you might have to use your imagination a bit but he has the kind of qualities you describe above.

We’ve been linked with Haidara but also rumours of him moving to the other red bull team

G Martens I really LOVE!
We have scouted him closely since October especially. Would love him, but can’t see it myself.

Better decision making anywhere will always help, but we've got some of Europe's most prolific forwards/AM's, we hardly lack for product, We scored two away goals against Juve. That should be enough to take anyone through in a two legged game. But we'd already lost two goals waiting for Dier and Dembele to get their heads out of their arses.

I really don't think Dier and Dembele are giving us a level that's going to be very hard to improve on many weeks. We've already got Wanyama here who's an upgrade on Dier, we just need Poch to grow some bollocks.

Compare our midfield to those ahead of us in the league, and you see where we are lagging. At their best they are all playing 433's with two very reactive 8's (sometimes 3 in Liverpool and City'd case).

Please explain to us all how this seasons Wanyama is an upgrade on Dier
